 Background of The Problem

Vocabulary is one of the linguistics components in learning


English. According to Aristya (2018, p.1), vocabulary is an important
part in mastering a foreign language, therefore language learning as
the meaning of  words is very often emphasized, both in books and in
class. Therefore, before the students learn the English language skills,
they should learning vocabulary as a first step . Richards and
Renandya in Rohmatillah (2014, p.70) said that vocabulary is a core
component of language which contains the basics of how students
speak, listen, read and write well.
Because vocabulary is an important thing to master, especially for
students, but students still have difficulty in developing their
vocabulary mastery . In the process of teaching and learning English,
students still have many difficulties in mastering vocabulary. According
to Cameron in Gushendra (2017, p. 54-55), indicators of student
difficulty in mastering vocabulary include students having difficulty
pronouncing vocabulary, students having difficulty spelling vocabulary,
students having difficulty mastering grammar and students having
difficulty in understanding the meaning in vocabulary. That is the most
common difficulty experienced by students in developing vocabulary
mastery.   
Focus of The Problem

In acccordance with the background of the problem above, in

this research the researcher will focus on investigating the

students’ difficulties in mastering vocabulary at the seventh

grade of SMPN 6 Kotabumi in the academic year 2020/2021.

What are the difficulties faced by students’ of seventh grade


in mastering vocabulary at SMPN 6 Kotabumi academic year
2020/2021?

What are the dominant difficulties in mastering vocabulary of


seventh grade at SMPN 6 Kotabumi academic year 2020/2021?
Objectives of The Research

The objectives of this research is to describe

the difficulties faced by students’ of seventh

grade in mastering vocabulary and the

dominant difficulty in mastering vocabulary of

seventh grade at SMPN 6 Kotabumi academic

year 2020/2021 .
Uses of The Research

The teacher
This research is expected to improve vocabulary,
teaching, and learning process, as well as choose the
best teaching strategy for his student's difficulty.

The researcher
The proposed study could benefit and help several
researchers as their guide. The findings of this study
can be used as references for other researchers who
are interested in doing similar studies.

communication can be defined as vocabulary mastery.
It can be concluded that vocabulary mastery is the competence to know words
and meanings. Students are not only expected to know the words but also their
meanings. Therefore, vocabulary mastery is a competency to know about
grammar, words and meanings.
