Quadratic Functions in Standard Form

Okay, let's think step-by-step: * The swimming section must be a rectangle * Let x be the length and y be the width * Then the area is A = xy * The perimeter is 2x + 2y = P (since there are two sides of length x and two of length y) * Using the perimeter formula, substitute 2x + 2y = P into the area formula: A = xy 2x + 2y = P * Now the area A is a function of one variable x (since y can be expressed in terms of x and P) * Take the derivative of A with respect to x and set it equal to 0 to find the maximum * The

Standard Form

Path of a Basketball through the air

What name is given to the shape formed by

the path formed by the basketball as it goes
through the air?

Parabola
The Graph of a Quadratic Function
● A quadratic function is a function that can be written in
the standard form y=ax2+bx+c, where a≠0.
● The graph of a quadratic function is a shape called a
parabola.
● The parent function of the family of quadratic functions
is f(x)=x2. Its graph is shown at the right.
Characteristics of a Parabola
Vertex of a Quadratic Function in Standard Form
● The vertex of a quadratic function is a point that consists of two coordinates (x,y).
The x-coordinate for the vertex is usually called h and the y-coordinate is usually
called k.

● The vertex of a parabola contains the maximum or minimum value of the function.
● The minimum or maximum value of the function is k. It is maximum if the parabola
opens downward and it is minimum if the parabola opens upward.
● A parabola opens upward if a > 0 and it opens downward if a < 0.

Example 2

or minimum.
Example 3
Compare the graph of to the graph of the parent function

a= -1, h=2, k=3

Transformations
1. The graph is reflected in the x-axis.
2. The graph has been translated 2 units to the right
and 3 units upward.
3. The graph has no vertical dilation.
Example 4
Compare the graph of to the graph of the parent function

a= 1/2, h= -4, k= -3
Transformations
1. The graph is not reflected in the x-axis.
2. The graph has been translated 4 units to the left
and 3 units downward.
3. The graph has a vertical compression (shrunk)
by a factor of ½.
Example 5
The path of a basketball thrown at an angle of 45° can be modeled by
, where y is the height and x is the time after release.

1. What is the maximum height that this basketball reaches according

to the model?
2. At what height was the ball thrown?

Answers:
1. The ball reached a maximum height of 18.5 feet.
2. The ball was thrown from a height of 6 feet.
Example 6
A go-cart track has about 380 racers per week and charges each racer $35 to
race. The owner estimates that there will be 20 more racers per week for
every $1 reduction in the price per racer. How can the owner of the go-cart
track maximize weekly revenue?

The owner should reduce the price 8 times by $1 to get a new

price of $27 and to sell 540 races and get a maximum profit of
$14580.
Example 7
Lifeguards at a beach want to rope off a rectangular swimming
section. They have P feet of rope with buoys. In terms of P,
what is the maximum area that the swimming section can have?
