Selection of Competencies Requiring Ict Integration

This document discusses ICT integration in education. It defines ICT as information and communication technologies used for everyday tasks like email and using mobile devices. ICT integration is using ICT to introduce, reinforce, and extend skills in the classroom. The document outlines several benefits of ICT integration, including increasing learner motivation and engagement, enhancing teacher training, and promoting learner-centered environments. It also discusses some disadvantages, such as misleading information and cyber attacks. Finally, it introduces the TPACK framework which emphasizes the interplay between technological knowledge, pedagogical knowledge, and content knowledge for effective technology integration.

SELECTION

OF
COMPETENCIES
REQUIRING
ICT
INTEGRATION
What is ICT?
• Information and communications
technology (ICT) skills refer to one’s
ability to converse with people through
various technologies.
• ICT refers to technology use for regular,
everyday tasks: sending an email,
making a video call, searching the
internet, using a tablet or mobile phone,
and more.
• ICT skills could also include the ability to
use older communication technologies
such as telephones, radios, and
televisions.
Uses of ICT
1. allows students to monitor and manage their
own learning
2. think critically and creatively
3. solve simulated real-world problems
4. work collaboratively
5. engage in ethical decision-making
6. adopt a global perspective towards issues
and ideas.
What is ICT Integration?

• ICT integration is defined as the use

of ICT to introduce, reinforce,
supplement and extend skills
(Pisapia, 1994).
ICTs can enhance the quality of education
in several ways:

1. by increasing learner motivation and
engagement, by facilitating the acquisition
of basic skills
2. by enhancing teacher training
3. ICTs are also transformational tools which,
when used appropriately, can promote the
shift to a learner-centered environment.
What are the practices of ICT integration
in Teaching-Learning Process?

1. communications via e-mails
2. use the web in researching and locating
resources
3. create online groups and build wikis
4. participate in online collaborative activities
5. apply technology-enhanced/web-based
lessons in the classroom.
Why is ICT Integration important?

• ICT in education improves engagement

and knowledge retention
• when ICT is integrated into lessons,
students become more engaged in their
work
• technology provides different
opportunities to make it more fun and
enjoyable in terms of teaching the same
things in different ways
What are some ICT Tools?
1. Computers

2. Laptops

3. Printers
4. Scanners

5. Software Programs

6. Data Projectors
7. Interactive Teaching Box

8. Cellular Phones/Smart Phones

9. Tablets
Some Disadvantages of ICT in Education

1. Misleading and misguiding information.

2. Risk of cyber attacks and hacks.
3. A risk to the traditional book and handwriting
methods.
4. Implementing computers and the internet for
ICT replace the convention education
curriculums.
5. Managing courses online is difficult.
6. Misuse of technology.
Types of
Knowledg
e in ICT
integration
1. Content knowledge- generally refers to the
facts, concepts, theories, and principles that
are taught and learned in specific academic
courses, rather than to related skills—such
as reading, writing, or researching—that
students also learn in school.

For example: engineers and mathematics

teachers both use knowledge of how to
solve algebraic problems in conducting their
day‐to‐day work.
2. Pedagogical knowledge- refers to the specialized
knowledge of teachers for creating effective teaching
and learning environments for all students.

One of the most powerful pedagogical examples
is where students and teachers produce work
and learning together. The teacher becomes
more of a mentor or coach helping students
achieve the learning goal. A final example of
good pedagogy is using real-world examples
within the classroom
3. Technological Knowledge (TK) – This
describes teachers’ knowledge of, and ability
to use, various technologies, technological
tools, and associated resources. TK concerns
understanding EdTech, considering its
possibilities for a specific subject area or
classroom, learning to recognize when it will
assist or impede learning, and continually
learning and adapting to new technology
offerings.
What is
TPACK
format?
• Technological pedagogical content
knowledge, is a framework to understand
and describe the kinds of knowledge
needed by a teacher for effective
pedagogical practice in a technology-
enhanced learning environment.
• TPACK framework outlines how content
(what is being taught) and pedagogy (how
the teacher imparts that content) must form
the foundation for any effective EdTech
integration.
• offers a productive approach to many of
the dilemmas that teachers face in
implementing educational technology
(EdTech) in their classrooms.
To make effective use of the TPACK framework, we should be open to
certain key ideas, including:

1. Concepts from the content being taught
can be represented using technology.
2. Pedagogical techniques can
communicate content in different ways
using technology,
3. Different content concepts require different
skill levels from students, and EdTech can
help address some of these requirements.
4. Students come into the classroom with
different backgrounds – including prior
educational experience and exposure to
technology – and lessons utilizing EdTech
should account for this possibility.
5. Educational technology can be used in
tandem with students’ existing knowledge,
helping them either strengthen prior
epistemologies or develop new ones.
Why is it important?
• This order is important because the
technology being implemented must
communicate the content and support
the pedagogy in order to enhance
students' learning experience. According
to the TPACK framework, specific
technological tools (hardware, software,
applications, associated information
literacy practices, etc.)
Implications of the TPACK Framework
• Teaching is a complex, ill-structured domain.
Underlying this complexity, however, are three
key components of teacher knowledge:
understanding of content, understanding of
teaching, and understanding of technology.
• The complexity of technology integration comes
from an appreciation of the rich connections of
knowledge among these three components and
the complex ways in which these are applied in
multifaceted and dynamic classroom contexts.
