Factoring: Math 8 Teacher Jervy Josiah D. Bayang

Here are the steps to factor each expression by extracting the GCF: 1. 22r5 – 11r The GCF is 11r = 22r5 – 11r 11r = 11r(2r4 – 1) 2. p5q2 – p2q4 The GCF is p2q2 = p5q2 – p2q4 p2q2 = p2q2(p3 – q2) 3. 9s2 + 18s3 - 27 The GCF is 9s2 = 9s2 + 18s3 - 27 9s2 = 9s2(1 + 2

Factoring
Factors are numbers or expressions that are multiplied
together to produce a product. The process of
factoring involves rewriting an expression as a product
of the factors. Factoring a polynomial is the opposite
of finding the product of polynomials.
Common Monomial Factor
To be able to factor a polynomial with a common
monomial factor, we have to get first the greatest
common factor. Below is the process of getting it.
1. Find the largest number that divides each of the
numerical coefficients in the polynomial.
2. For each literal coefficient appearing in every term of
the polynomial, indicate the lowest power that
occurs.
3. Multiply the results found in steps 1 and 2.
Find the GCF of the following Polynomials.
1. 18y5 – 36y4 + 12y3

The largest number that divides 18, 36, and 12 is 6.

The lowest power of y is y3
The GCF is 6y3
Find the GCF of the following Polynomials.
2. 4a3b2 + 32a2b5 + 20ab3

The largest number that divides 4, 32, and 20 is 4.

The lowest power of a is a
The lowest power of b is b2
The GCF is 4ab2
Find the GCF of the following Polynomials.
3. m5n3p2 – 3m3n3

The largest number that divides 1 and 3 is 1.

The lowest power of m is m3
The lowest power of n is n3
The GCF is m3n3
Find the GCF of the following Polynomials.

4. 12c3 + 8c2
5. 18a2b4 + 12a3b2
6. 9x2 – 12x + 6

REVIEW
How to divide a polynomial?
To factor out the GCF of a polynomial:
1. Find the GCF
2. Divide each term in the polynomial by the GCF to
obtain the other factor of the polynomial.
3. Express the polynomial as the product of the factors
found in steps 1 and 2.
Factor the following expressions.
1. 8x2 + 12x3 Find the GCF
The GCF is 4x2
= 8x2 + 12x3 Divide each term by the GCF
4x2
= 8x2 + 12x3
4x2 4x2
= 2 + 3x or 3x + 2
