Enhanced Flexible Timeslot Assignment

EFTA (Enhanced Flexible Timeslot Assignment) allows higher timeslot utilization by enabling uplink and downlink reservation corresponding to a mobile's maximum capability rather than restricting assignments based on simultaneous timeslot limits. This increases performance for EDGE and EDGE Evolution by allowing full utilization of a mobile's uplink and downlink timeslots. BSC/PCU software support EFTA, while BTS/core network are unaffected.

EFTA

ENHANCED FLEXIBLE TIMESLOT

ASSIGNMENT
EFTA
• Enhanced Flexible Timeslot Assignment- Enhanced Flexible Timeslot Assignment
(EFTA) is part of 3GPP Rel-9 and is applicable to Packet Switched services.

• It enables higher timeslot utilization and end-user performance by allowing UL and

DL reservation corresponding to the mobiles maximal timeslot capability and
“over-scheduling”

• BSC/PCU, OSS and MS SW feature

• BTS/Core Network not affected

• Increases EDGE & EDGE Evolution performance

Why EFTA

• Without EFTA an MS, semi-statically allocates resources in the UL and DL

directions according to its maximum simultaneous timeslots (TS) attribute, based
on its Multi-Slot Class (MSMC).

– For example, a class 33 mobile can handle 5 DL and 4 UL timeslots, but only 6
simultaneously (i.e., 5+1 , 2+4 etc. for DL +UL).

– Also it is the network (namely the PCU) that must detect the change of data
flow and reallocate to a DL+UL combination, a process that can take a
relatively long time.
Why EFTA
– With EFTA , an MS is always allocated resources on the sum of its UL
and DL timeslots capabilities, and it is the actual data flow and
direction that dictates the usage of the allocated timeslots.

– The MS now decides when to transmit and receive data on these

timeslots. Since the network side does not have to make assumptions
on the direction of the traffic, UL and DL timeslots can be fully utilized

• If EFTA is used, a multi-slot class 33 mobile will be allocated to 5DL+4UL

FEATURES & BENEFITS

• Three principles with data transmission and scheduling in EFTA :

– 1. The mobile station shall prioritize uplink transmission before reading downlink
reception.
– 2. When mobile station has nothing to transmit it shall read for downlink reception
– 3. When transmitting, the uplink data shall be scheduled in a specific manner in order to
minimize collisions with the downlink data

• Benefits:
– Higher efficiency in timeslot allocation and scheduling since the BSC does not have to
make assumptions on the direction of the traffic,
– UL and DL timeslots can be fully utilized as the mobile is always allocated on all its up-
and downlink timeslots, and it is the actual traffic that decides the usage of the allocated
timeslots.
– Ex: 5+4 assignment and then UL data is prioritized

specified cell.
• In order to use this command the optional feature Enhanced Flexible Time Slot Assignment
must be available in the system.
• The availability of this command depends on commercial agreements.
• The command is not valid for external cells.
• The order remains after system restart.
