Lesson 3B - Combinations of Functions
Lesson 3B - Combinations of Functions
Sum f g x f x g x
Difference f g x f x g x
Product
f g x f x g x
Quotient f f x
x , where g x 0
g g x
Example: Let f(x) = 5x² -2x +3 and
g(x) = 4x² +7x -5
Find f + g Find f - g
f ( x) g ( x) f ( x) g ( x)
(5 x 2 2 x 3) (4 x 2 7 x 5) (5 x 2 2 x 3) (4 x 2 7 x 5)
5x 2 4 x 2 2x 7 x 3 5 5x 2 4x 2 2 x 7 x 3 5
9 x 2 5x 2 x 2 9x 8
Example:
Example: Let f(x) = 5x² and
and g(x) = 3x – 1.

The sum f + g
f g x f x g x
This just says that to find the sum of two functions, add
them together. You should simplify by finding like terms.

The difference f - g
f g x f x g x
To find the difference between two functions, subtract
the first from the second. CAUTION: Make sure you
distribute the – to each term of the second function. You
should simplify by combining like terms.

The product f • g
f g x f x g x
To find the product of two functions, put parenthesis
around them and multiply each term from the first
function to each term of the second function.

Composition of Functions
A composite function is a combination of
two functions.
2
4 x 8 x 8 x 16 2 x 2 8 x 10
4 x 2 16 x 16
You may need to evaluate a composite
function for a particular value of x.
g 3 3 4 13
Method 2: 2
Substitute 3 into
g(x).
Substitute that
value into f(x). f 13 5 313 34
