Economic

Globalization and
Sustainability
What is Economic
Globalization?🤔
• refers to the increasing interdependence of world
economies as a result of the growing scale of cross-
border trade of commodities and services, flow of
international capital and wide and rapid spread of
technologies
What causes economic
globalization?🤔
• In recent decades the process of globalisation has
accelerated; this is due to a variety of factors, but
important ones include improved trade, increased
labour and capital mobility and improved
technology.
Why Economic developement is
important?🤔
• In general, globalization decreases the cost of
manufacturing. This means that companies can
offer goods at a lower price to consumers. The
average cost of goods is a key aspect that
contributes to increases in the standard of living.
Consumers also have access to a wider variety of
goods.
What is sustainability ?🤔
Sustainable is an adjective for something that is able
to be sustained or something that is “bearable” and
“capable of being continued at a certain level”. In the
end, sustainability can perhaps be seen as the
process by which something is kept at a certain level.
Why sustainability is
important?🤔
• Sustainability improves the quality of our lives,
protects our ecosystem and preserves natural
resources for future generations. Going green and
sustainable is not only beneficial for the company;
it also maximizes the benefits from an
environmental focus in the long-term. ...
• Nonetheless, nowadays, because of the
environmental and social problems societies
around the world are facing, sustainability has
been increasingly used in a specific way. Nowadays,
sustainability is usually defined as the processes
and actions through which humankind avoids the
depletion of natural resources, in order to keep an
ecological balance that doesn’t allow the quality of
life of modern societies to decrease.
What is the sustainable
developement?🤔
• Sustainable development is the organizing principle
for meeting human development goals while
simultaneously sustaining the ability of natural
systems to provide the natural resources and
ecosystem servicesbased upon which the economy
and societydepend.
• The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a
set of policy goals that attempt to implement the
principle of sustainability on the economic, social
and ecological level in every country of the world.
FOUR PILLARS OF
SUSTAINABILITY
• SOCIAL SUSTAINABILITY aims to preserve social capital
by investing and creating services that constitute the
framework of our society.

• HUMAN SUSTAINABILITY aims to maintain and

improve the human capital in society. Investments in
the health and education systems, access to services,
nutrition, knowledge and skills are all programs under
the umbrella of human sustainability.
• ECONOMIC SUSTAINABILITY aims to maintain the
capital intact. If social sustainability focuses on
improving social equality, economic sustainability
aims to improve the standard of living.

• ENVIROMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY aims to improve

human welfare through the protection of natural
capital (e.g. land, air, water, minerals etc.).
• The principle of the four pillars of sustainability
states that for complete sustainability problems to
be solved in relation to all four pillars of
sustainability and then need be maintained.
Globalization and sustainability
• explores the interconnectedness of human-made
systems and communities; the relationship
between local and global processes; how local
experiences mediate the global; the opportunities
and tensions provided by world-
interconnectedness; the impact of decision- making
on humankind and the environment.
How does economic globalization
negatively affect sustainability?🤔
• Decreased Biodiversity

• Increased greenhouse gas emissions, ocean

acidification, deforestation (and other forms of
habitat loss or destruction), climate change, and
the introduction of invasive species all work to
reduce biodiversity around the globe
How does globalization affect sustainability?🤔

•Generally speaking, global warming, deforestation,

ozone depletion, biodiversity, oceans and pollution
are the key areas impacted by globalization. The
movement of MNEs to countries where
environmental laws are absent or not enforced has
resulted in greater environmental degradation.
