Research Problem Presentation

This document discusses defining and writing a good research problem statement. It explains that a research problem is a statement about an area needing investigation to improve understanding. The key elements of a research problem include the topic, objectives, timeframe and population. A good problem statement clearly defines the ideal situation, current reality, consequences of the problem, and a proposed solution. It should be specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-bound. The document provides guidance on the process for writing an effective problem statement using questions to identify the key details about the problem.

Research Problem
 Definition :
 A statement about an area of concern, condition to be
improved, a difficulty to be eliminated, or a troubling
question that exists in scholarly literature, in theory,
or in practise that points to the need for meaningful
understanding and deliberate investigation.
Purpose
 Introduce the reader to the importance of the topic being studied
 Reader is oriented to significance of the study and research questions.
 Places the problem into particular context that defines the parameters
of what is to be investigated
 Provides the framework for reporting the results and indicates what is
probably necessary to conduct the study and explain how the findings
will present the information.
Defining the problem
 In almost every problem solving methodology the
first step is defining or identifying the problem. It is
the most difficult and the most important of all the
steps. It involves diagnosing the situation so that the
focus on the real problem and not on its symptoms.
The elements of the research problem
 The topic or theme/ subject matter to be investigated
 Objectives or aims of the problem for investigation
 The period or time of the research during which the data
are to be gathered
 Areas where the study will be conducted
 Population from whom the data are to be gathered
The necessary steps in defining the research problem
 Step 1
Identify the problem
 Step 2
Review the Literature
 Step 3
Clarify the problem
 Step 4
Clearly define terms and concepts
The necessary steps in defining the research problem
 Step 5
Define the population
 Step 6
Develop the instrumentation plan
 Step 7
Collect data
 Step 8
Analyze the data
Characteristics of a good research problem
 Specific
 Measurable
 Achievable
 Realistic
 Time-bound
Writing the problem statement
 What is a problem statement?
 A problem statement is a concise description of the problem or
issues a project seeks to address.
 Importance of a problem statement
 A problem statement is important to a process improvement project
because it helps clearly identify the goals of the project and outline
the scope of a project.
Importance of a problem statement

 It also helps guide the activities and decisions of the

people who are working on the project.
 It can help a business or organization gain support
and buy-in for a process improvement project.
What are the key elements of a problem statement?
 There are four key elements you should include when
writing a problem statement:
 1. Ideal situation
 2. Reality
 3. Consequences
 4. Proposal
How to write a problem statement

 A good problem statement can be created by identifying

and answering several questions related to the problem.
You can use the following process to craft a problem
statement that addresses the following:

 Identify the problem.

 Begin your statement with your ideal situation.
 Describe current gaps.
 State the consequences of the problem.
 Propose addressing the problem.
The process used to write a problem statement should involve answering questions
using a method commonly known as 5W2H.
This process involves identifying
 what the problem is,
 why it is a problem,
 when and where the problem was identified,
 who the problem impacts,
 how they are impacted by the problem
 how much of an impact the problem has.
 THE END
