Research Problem
Definition :
A statement about an area of concern, condition to be
improved, a difficulty to be eliminated, or a troubling
question that exists in scholarly literature, in theory,
or in practise that points to the need for meaningful
understanding and deliberate investigation.
Purpose
Introduce the reader to the importance of the topic being studied
Reader is oriented to significance of the study and research questions.
Places the problem into particular context that defines the parameters
of what is to be investigated
Provides the framework for reporting the results and indicates what is
probably necessary to conduct the study and explain how the findings
will present the information.
Defining the problem
In almost every problem solving methodology the
first step is defining or identifying the problem. It is
the most difficult and the most important of all the
steps. It involves diagnosing the situation so that the
focus on the real problem and not on its symptoms.
The elements of the research problem
The topic or theme/ subject matter to be investigated
Objectives or aims of the problem for investigation
The period or time of the research during which the data
are to be gathered
Areas where the study will be conducted
Population from whom the data are to be gathered
The necessary steps in defining the research problem
Step 1
Identify the problem
Step 2
Review the Literature
Step 3
Clarify the problem
Step 4
Clearly define terms and concepts
The necessary steps in defining the research problem
Step 5
Define the population
Step 6
Develop the instrumentation plan
Step 7
Collect data
Step 8
Analyze the data
Characteristics of a good research problem
Specific
Measurable
Achievable
Realistic
Time-bound
Writing the problem statement
What is a problem statement?
A problem statement is a concise description of the problem or
issues a project seeks to address.
Importance of a problem statement
A problem statement is important to a process improvement project
because it helps clearly identify the goals of the project and outline
the scope of a project.
