1.1 Definition and Characteristics of IoT

This document provides an overview of an Internet of Things (IoT) course. It defines IoT as a global network of devices connected to the internet that can communicate and exchange data. The document outlines the course objectives to explain IoT concepts and characteristics. It then describes the technical building blocks of IoT including devices, communication technologies, and enabling technologies. Finally, it discusses some applications of IoT like smart homes, cities, retail, and healthcare and highlights characteristics such as being dynamic, self-configuring, using standard communication protocols, and having unique identities.

INTERNET OF
THINGS
Dr.K.Mohaideen Abdul Kadhar, AP(SG)/ECE
Mr.M.Nithyakumar,
AP/ECE
Unit-I Syllabus
• Definition and characteristics of IoT,
Technical Building blocks of IoT, Device,
Communication Technologies, Physical
design of IoT, IoT enabling technologies,
IoT Issues and Challenges- Planning, Costs
and Quality ,Security and Privacy, Risks.
Course Outcome &
Learning Outcome.
• CO1: Explain the fundamental concepts on
Internet of Things (IoT)
• LO1: Define and explain the
characteristics of IOT.
Internet Of Things
• Internet of Things(IoT) comprises things
that have unique identities and are
connected to internet.
• The scope of IoT is connecting things
(devices, appliances, machines) to the
internet and allows these things to
communicate and exchange data while
executing meaningful applications towards
a common user or machine goal.
Applications of IOT
• The applications of IOT span a wide range
of domains including
• Homes
• Cities
• Environment
• Energy systems
• Retail
• Logistics
• Industry
• Agriculture
• Health
1.1 Definition &
Characteristics of loT
• Definition: A dynamic global network
infrastructure with self-configuring
capabilities based on standard and
interoperable communication protocols
where physical and virtual "things" have
identities, physical attributes, and virtual
personalities and use intelligent interfaces,
and are seamlessly integrated into the
information network, often communicate
data associated with users and their
environments.
Characteristics of IOT
• Dynamic & Self-Adapting
• Self-Configuring
• Interoperable Communication Protocols
• Unique Identity
• Integrated into Information Network
• Dynamic & Self-Adapting:
• IoT devices and systems may have the
capability to dynamically adapt with the
changing contexts and take actions based on
their operating conditions, user's context, or
sensed environment.
• Ex: surveillance system comprising of a
number of surveillance cameras.
• Self-Configuring:
• loT devices may have self-configuring
capability, allowing a large number of devices
to work together to provide certain
functionality (such as weather monitoring).
• These devices have the ability configure
themselves (in association with the loT
infrastructure), setup the networking, and fetch
latest software upgrades with minimal manual
or user intervention.
• Interoperable Communication Protocols:
• IoT devices may support a number of
interoperable communication protocols and can
communicate with other devices and also with the
infrastructure.
• Unique Identity:
• Each loT device has a unique identity and a unique
identifier (such as an IP address or a URI). IoT
systems may have intelligent interfaces which
adapt based on the context, allow communicating
with users and the environmental contexts.
• IoT device interfaces allow users to query the
devices, monitor their status, and control them
remotely, in association with the control,
configuration and management infrastructure.
• Integrated into Information Network:
• IoT devices are usually integrated into the
information network that allows them to
communicate and exchange data with other
devices and systems.
