Missing Plot Technique

This document discusses techniques for handling missing plot data in agricultural experiments. It describes how observations can be lost due to accidents or pests attacking crops. The standard approach is to perform least squares analysis on the available observational equations, but this can be difficult with missing data. The Yates method estimates missing values and inserts them into the equations before analyzing the data. Specific techniques are presented for analyzing randomized block designs and latin square designs with missing data, including calculating sums of squares and determining significance.

Missing Plot Techniques

Why missing plot techniques?

• One or more observations from an experiment may be lost due to
• Accident
• Mishandling
• Attack of pest(for agricultural experiments) etc.
• Correct procedure is to perform least square analysis on the
observational equations for the available observations
• Resulting normal equations are very difficult to solve owing to the
missing observations.
• Yates (1937) method:
• Estimate the missing values
• Insert the estimates in the equation
• Analyze the data
