London Heathrow Terminal 5:
Introduction:
 Heathrow Airport is used by over 90 airlines which fly to 170 destinations
worldwide.
 It is owned and operated by BAA (British Airport Authority).
 It is the world's second busiest airport in total passenger traffic.
 It handles 35 million passengers a year.

Features:
 The lighting inside the terminal building can be programmed to different
settings according to season, time of day and weather conditions.
 Further manage the temperature of the interior brise soleil panels have
been fitted to the exterior
Construction Features:

 Its four storey are covered by a single-span undulating steel frame

roof, with glass façades angled at 6.5 degrees to the vertical.

 To add to the overall ambient environment, the lighting inside the

terminal building can be programmed to different settings according to
season, time of day and weather conditions.

 The main terminal building is referred to as Terminal 5A

 The two satellite buildings is referred to as Terminal 5B , 5C and 5D

 The Frontal building connecting roadways and Railways to T5A.

 It has 60 aircraft stands and capacity for 30 million passengers

annually. There are more than 100 shops and restaurants.
Construction:
OUTLAY:
Services provided by Heathrow:
 An underground automated people mover (APM) system is used to
transport passengers between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2,3.
 APM is only available to passengers and other authorized personnel.

 HOK provided interior architectural design for Phase I of the Heathrow

Terminal 5 tracked-transit system (T5-TTS)

Terminal 1:
 Contains a check-in hall a departure lounge with retail stores and other
passenger services, and a baggage reclaim hall.
 It contains the bulk of the terminal's baggage handling system.
Terminal 2:
 There will be two satellite buildings named Terminal 2B and Terminal 2C.
Terminal 2B will provide Heathrow with 16 additional stands
 It will be connected to the main terminal building by an underground link.

Terminal 3:
To handle flight departures for long-haul routes.
 The airport had a direct helicopter service to Central London from the
gardens on the roof of the terminal building.
 Terminal 3 using the Airbus A380
Terminal 4:
 The forecourt has been upgraded to reduce traffic congestion and improve
security.

 Two new stands to accommodate the Airbus A380 and a new baggage
system has been installed.

Terminal 5:
 Consists of a four storey main terminal building and two satellite buildings
linked to the main terminal by an underground people mover transit system.

 The transport network around the airport has been extended to cope with
the increase in passenger numbers.

 A dedicated motorway spur has been built to the terminal includes a 3,800

space multi-storey car park.

 A more distant long-stay car park for business passengers will be linked to
the terminal by a personal rapid transit system.
Transportation Services:
Heathrow Express Service:
 A non-stop service Departing from Heathrow Terminal 5 station or Heathrow
Central station (Terminals 1 & 3).
 Heathrow Express transfer service operates between Terminal 4 and
Heathrow Central to connect with services from London and Terminal 5.

London Underground Piccadilly line:

 Four tube stations serve the airport - Terminals 1, 2, 3
 Terminal 4 & 5 serve the passenger terminals, and Hatton Cross serves
the maintenance areas.
 The standard journey time from the Heathrow Terminals 1 & 3 tube
station to Central London is 40–50 minutes.
Railway links:
 There is a rail station nearby houses 6 platforms, two for the Heathrow
Express.

 The station is covered by a transparent roof which enable natural light to

flood down onto the ends of the platforms.

 Five 50-person lifts will transport passengers straight up to the departures

hall.

 A light rail system that uses driverless trains to shuttle passengers

underground between the Main Terminal T5A and the satellite T5B.

Bus and coach:

 Many buses and coaches operate from the large Heathrow airport central
bus station serving Terminals 1, 2 and 3.

 And also from bus stations at Terminals 4 and 5.

Car:
 Heathrow is accessible via the M4 motorway and A4 road (Terminals 1–3),
the M25 motorway (Terminals 4 and 5), and the A30 road (Terminal 4).
 Additionally, there are car parks (not run by BAA) just outside the airport;
these are connected to the terminals by shuttle buses.
 The two larger tunnels are each two lanes wide and are used for motorized
traffic.
 The two smaller tunnels were originally reserved for pedestrians and
bicycles

Bicycle:

 There are (mainly off-road) bicycle routes to some of the terminals.

 Free bicycle parking places are available in car parks 1 and 1A.
Air bridges for Transport:
Mumbai Airport compared to Heathrow:

 Terminal 1, for domestic flights

 Terminal 2, for international flights
 Cargo Terminal
Problems observed at Mumbai Airport:

 Lack of signs and communication for international transit passengers

 Once you're in, there are no seats in which to rest while waiting for your
flight check-in desk to open.

 No less than 4-5 security screenings

Luggage transfers can be of a worry and known to get misplaced.

 Smoking is allowed in a certain restaurant however an order from the

menu may be required.

Present services:
 Free shuttle service between the international and domestic terminals;
runs every 30 minutes.
 Pre-paid taxi service between the international and domestic terminals
Conclusion:
 Need to improve transportation Facilities
 Minimize security screenings
 Arrange new baggage system
 Increase platforms and build Air bridges for the transportation.
