WOMEN EMPOWERMENT IN BANKING SECTOR


INTRODUCTION
 Women Empowerment refers to increasing the
spiritual, political, social, educational, gender,
or economic strength of individuals and
communities of women.
 Nationalization of the Indian Banking sector in
1969 as the first major step to reduce gender
discrimination against women in banking sector
and that provide opportunity for women
empowerment.
 Women play a vital role in Indian economy in
banking sector.
•According to a survey by International Executive
research firm, around 11% of Indian Companies
have women CEO’s, where in US the women CEO’s
is just account for 3% of the total consideration.

•The study is about the Indian women who have


been placed in top position in the banking sector
and what is their role in empowerment of women
ROLE OF WOMEN EMPOWERMENT
IN BANKING SECTOR
• Earlier leadership theories focused on The Great
Man theory and women were at all excluded from
being seen as a leader due to fact that earlier
people considered men and women having different
behavior, different skills and attitudes.
• With changing time, status of women gained
importance and now in this dynamic world woman
entrepreneurs are an important part of the
corporate sector. This presentation shows the role
of women leaders in banking industry.
• The banking Sector in India was male dominating
till 1980‟s but in last three decades the gender
equality became fairly poised.
 There are many women in banking sector
who are working on the top positions in
different banks, like:

• Arundhati Bhattacharya as Chairperson of SBI


• Chanda Kochhar as CEO and MD of ICICI bank
• Shikha Sharma as CEO of AXIS BANK
• Usha Ananthasubramanian as CEO and MD of
Punjab National Bank
• Naina Lal Kidwai as group general manager
and country head of HSBC in India
• Renu Sud Krnad as CEO of HDFC bank
• Meera Sanval as operational head of Royal
bank of Scotland in India

category in PSU
banks. However, SBI
has a healthy pipeline
of women managers.
We have 12 women in
the CGM and upwards
category," says
Bhattacharya.
ARUNDHATI
BHATTACHARYA
• Bhattacharya joined SBI in September 1977. She is
the first woman to lead an India-based Fortune 500
company. Initially, she joined SBI in 1977 as
probationary officer at the age of 22 years. She
chaired the office of the MANAGING DIRECTOR of
the bank in 2013.

• She has held several positions during her 36-year


career with the bank. She has also served at the
bank's New York office.

• She has been involved in the launch of several new


businesses such as SBI General Insurance, SBI
Custodial Services and the SBI Macquarie
Infrastructure Fund.
• She introduced a two-year sabbatical policy for
women employees for child or elder care. On
Women's day, she decided to introduce free
vaccination against cervical cancer to all her
woman employees.

• In 2016, she was named the 25th most powerful


woman in the world by Forbes. This is her first time
being ranked on the list. In the same year, she was
ranked among the FP Top 100 Global Thinkers by
Foreign Policy magazine. She was named the 4th
most powerful women in Asia Pacific by Fortune.

CHANDA KOCHHAR
• Chanda Kochhar had joined ICICI as a
Management Trainee in 1984. In 2009, she
appointed as MANAGING DIRECTOR and CHIEF
EXECUTIVE OFFICER of ICICI bank.
• Under Chanda Kochhar’s leadership ICICI Bank
had launch a work-from-home programme to
prevent women employees from dropping out
of its workforce. Because women leave the
organization largely do on account of childcare,
maternity, or because of long commuting.

• Kochhar was ranked as the most powerful


businesswoman in India in Forbes' list of 'The
World's 100 Most Powerful Women 2013'.
• In 2011, she was awarded “padma vibhushan”
Today, the innovative and sharp strategies
implemented under Kochhar’s leadership have made
ICICI a market leader in India’s retail banking sector.

• In 2000, she decided to keep the bank open for


twelve hours in a day when other banks were open
for four to seven hours a day.

• She was also one of the bankers who came up with


electronic banking and installed 2000 ATM
machines all over India.

• Head of internet banking division to start up and


grow E-banking.

SHIKHA SHARMA
• Shikha Sharma has more than three decades of
experience in the financial sector having begun her
career with ICICI Bank in 1980.

• In her 29-year tenure with the ICICI group, Mrs.


Sharma was instrumental in setting up ICICI
Securities – a joint venture between ICICI and J.P.
Morgan, besides setting up various group businesses
for ICICI, including investment banking and retail
finance.

• Since Mrs. Sharma's appointment as MD & CEO of


Axis Bank in 2009, the bank’s stock has gained over
90%.
Under Sharma’s leadership,
• Axis Bank has received many awards notably,
'Bank of the Year in India' for the year 2014 by
The Banker Magazine, Financial Times.

• The Bank was ranked as the 'Most Trusted Private


Sector Bank' second year in a row - 'Most Trusted
Brand Survey', conducted by Brand Equity,
Economic Times.

• Axis Bank was ranked No 1 company to work for in


the BFSI sector - 'The Best Companies to Work for'
survey by Business Today in 2013.

CONCLUSION
 Entrepreneurship among women, no doubt
improves the wealth of the nation in general and
of the family in particular.
 A woman has proved themselves as successful
leaders in banking sector as well as in various
organizations. There are lots of problems which
a women faces during her careers growth.
 Women need to be more practical. Women need
to become more aware so they can reposition
their behavior to develop a style that feels right
and delivers effective leadership.
