Addition and Subtraction of Polynomials

This document discusses addition and subtraction of polynomials. It defines key polynomial terms such as monomial, binomial, and trinomial. It provides examples of adding and subtracting polynomials by combining like terms. The document also outlines the process of subtracting polynomials by changing the signs and combining like terms. Examples are worked through to demonstrate how to find the sum and difference of polynomials.

INTRODUCTION TO POLYNOMIALS

is made up of two terms, namely Poly

(meaning “many”) and Nominal
(meaning “terms.”). A polynomial is
defined as an expression which is
composed of variables, constants and
exponents, that are combined using the
mathematical operations such as
addition, subtraction, multiplication and
division (No division operation by a
variable)
POLYNOMIAL TERMS

MONOMIAL has a single

term
BINOMIAL has two terms
TRINOMIAL has three
terms and a polynomial
has one or more than one
term
SYMBOLS

VARIABLE
a symbol which works as a
placeholder for expression or
quantities that may vary or
change

COEFFICIENT
it is usually a number, but may
be any expression (including
variables such as a, b and c).
