(M7sp-Iva-3) Statistical Instruments

This document discusses formulating simple statistical instruments. It identifies statistical instruments as devices used to gather data. There are two main types: researcher-completed instruments like surveys and rating scales; and subject-completed instruments like questionnaires. Simple ways to formulate instruments are discussed, like conducting surveys using interviews or questionnaires. Guidelines for writing clear questionnaire questions are provided. Examples of activities to practice using statistical instruments are given, such as having students complete a questionnaire and using the results to identify engaged learners.

Statistical Instruments

-This are devices used by the researcher to gather data.

A statistical instrument is any
process that aim at describing a
phenomenon by using any tool. It is a
device used to gather or collect the
needed data of a study.
Types of Statistical Instruments
1. Researcher –Completed Instruments
Statistical instruments specifically filled by the
researcher

Examples:
Rating scales, interview schedules/guides, tally sheets, flowcharts,
performance checklists, time and motion logs, and observation forms, are
some examples of researcher- completed instruments which are to be filled
by the researcher.
Types of Statistical Instruments
2. Subject-Completed Instruments
 Statistical instruments which are to be filled by the subject of the
study or the ones being studied.

Examples:
Questionnaires, self-checklists, attitude scales, personality inventories,
achievement/aptitude tests, projective devices, and sociometric devices are
some examples of subject-completed instruments which are to be filled by
the subject of the study or the ones being studied.
Formulating simple
Statistical Instruments
Data is a collection of facts or information. They may be gathered
using the following method:

1.Conducting Surveys
a.Interview method is done when a person solicits information from
another person(face to face)
b.Questionnaire is done through the use of printed questions
regarding a certain matter.(pen and paper)
 A Questionnaire is a set of printed or written
questions with a choice of answers, devised for the
purpose of a statistical study .
 Survey is a form of a statistical instrument used in
investigating the opinions or experiences of (a group
of people) by asking them questions.
2.Observing the outcomes of Data/ Observation- The person who
gathers data is what we called the investigator while the
person/object being observed is the subject.
3. Experimentation is used by physicists and behavioral scientists
in collecting data.
4. Reading statistical Publication/Registration method
-refers to continuous, permanent, compulsory of the recordings of
the occurrence of vital events together with certain identifying or
descriptive characteristics concerning them.
Scenario 1.
Charmaine wanted to know if her classmates
already submitted necessary forms for
scholarship application. What statistical
instrument can she use to ensure accuracy of
data.
 Based on the scenario, we can conclude that Charmaine needs to
ask her classmates if they already submitted the necessary forms .
Due to possible high number of her classmates, she can have a
hard time if she directly checked the forms of her classmates one-
by-one.

 Recall that subject completed instrument is a

statistical instrument which is to be filled by the
subject or the ones being studied.
 In this case, to save time, Charmaine can use a checklist
that is to be filled by her classmates to ensure that each of
them already submitted the necessary documents for
scholarship application
Guides in formulating questions:
1. Be clear, specific, and direct.
2. Use the participant’s vocabulary
3. Walk like a real person and treat the questions like a conversation
4. Ask only one person at a time
5. Practice good grammar
6. Avoid bias and loaded words
7. Start with broad, general questions and progress to specific and harder ones
8.Present all the possibilitiese

Activity 2: Complete the graphic organizer below about survey and
questionnaire.

STATISTICAL INSTRUMENTS

SURVEY QUESTIONNAIRE

A questionnaire is a research instrument that consists of a set of questions or

other types of prompts that aims to collect information from a respondent. A
questionnaire may or may not be delivered in the form of a survey, but a survey
always consists of a questionnaire.
Activity 3: What I Can Do !
Read the situation below and answer the following
questions that follow.
A class of students gathered data concerning which canteen foods
were most often thrown in the garbage. As a result of these efforts,
certain items were removed from the regular menu.
1. What do you think did the students do to gather the needed data?
2. How did they know which foods were most often thrown in the
garbage?
3. If you were to do the same, how will you do it?
Activity 4: Make Me Organize!

1. From the survey in your community or in school, you find

out how far your classmates are travelling from their house to
their barangay hall to get their module.(Interview 10
schoolmates) Make the best estimate using kilometer .
2. If you are the RBI secretary in your class, how can you
identify the number and names of the Most Engaged Learners in
Mathematics every Tuesday.
Make Me Organize!
 Each learner will type on the chat box their names, address and the
distance they are travelling in going to their barangay hall to get their
modules. Time of submission is after one hour of the session.
