Introduction
• BCI are system that provide translation
of the electrical activity of the human
brain into computer is the study of
brain functions.
• which can control device in real time.
History- Discovering the Basics
• 1924: Hans Berger discovers the EEG
Analyses the inter relation of EEG and brain
diseases.
• 1970: First developments to use brain waves as input.
. 1990:first sucessful
experiments with
monkeys
What is BCI
• Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCI)
– Interaction between the human neural system and
machines
– Goal
• Enabling people (especially disabled) to communicate
and control devices by mere thinking.
– BCI is a control system
Structure of a BCI
Model of BCI
How BCI Works……..?
EEG cap
→ Electroencephalography (EEG) is an electrophysiological
monitoring method to record electrical activity of the brain.
→ It is typically non-invasive, with the electrodes placed
along the scalp , although invasive electrodes are sometimes
used in specific applications.
→ EEG measures voltage fluctuations
resulting from ionic current within the neurons
of the brain.
Application
→ Bionics/Cybernetics.
→ Memory Upload/Download.
→ Dream Capture.
→ Brain as a computer.
→ Search Engines through brain.
Future Scope
Advantages
• BCIs will help creating a Direct communication pathway
between a human
or animal brain and any external devices like computers.
• BCI has increased the possibility of treatment of disabilities
related to
nervous system along with the old technique of
Neuroprosthetics.
Disadvantages
. BCIs techniques are costly .It requires a lot of money to set
up BCI environment
Conclusion
→ Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) is a method of
communication based on
voluntary neural activity generated by the brain.
→ The neural activity used in BCI can be recorded
using invasive or noninvasive
techniques.
