Venn Diagram and Operation On Sets

Johann Venn developed the Venn diagram to visualize basic set operations including union, intersection, complement, and difference. The document then defines each of these set operations - union combines elements that are in set A, B, or both; intersection includes elements common to both sets; complement are elements that are not in the given set; and difference are elements in set A but not in set B.

Basic set Operations
Union of sets
The union of sets A and B is the
set consisting of all the elements
which belong to either A or B or
both. We write it as AꓴB, read as
A union of B.
Union of sets
Intersection of sets
The intersection of two sets A
and B is the set of elements
common to both A and B. We
write it as A∩B, read as “ A
intersection B.”
Intersection of sets
Complement of a sets
The complement of set A is the
consisting of all elements in the
universal set ꓴ which are not elements
of set A . It is denoted by A’ or Ā or A ͨ,
read as “complement of set A.”
Complement of a sets
Difference of sets
The difference of sets A and B,
denoted as A-B ( or A\B ), is the
elements which belongs to A but
which does not belong B.
