DSS – An Overview
Acc. To Scott Morton
“ DSS is an interactive computer-based
system, which helps decision-maker utilize
data & models to solve unstructured
problems.”
• A Decision Support System is a specialized
kind of information system, which is an
interactive system to supports in the
decision-making process of a manager in an
organisation, especially in semi-structured
situations.
DSS – An Overview
• It utilizes:
▫ Information
▫ Models
▫ Data manipulation tools
• To help make decisions in semi-structured
to unstructured situations.
Components of DSS
• Model management component – consists
of both the DSS models and the model
management system
• Data management component – stores and
maintains the information that you want your
DSS to use
• User interface management component –
allows you to communicate with the DSS
Components of DSS
Overview of a Decision-Support System
The data base
• Is a collection of the current or the historical
data from a number of the applications or the groups.
• Very well organized.
• Provides very easy access for a large variety of the
applications needed.
• Data integrity is to be maintained in a very efficient
way.
• Decision Support System uses data that have been
extracted from the relevant databases – both the
internal and the external – and then stored especially
for the Decision Support System.
The Model – base
• Illustrates the different components or the
relationships of a phenomenon.
• Can be a physical model, a mathematical model
or the verbal model.
• Types of the models can be categorized as the
follows –
▫ Behavioral Model
▫ Management Science Model
▫ Operations Research Model
Types of the models
• Behavioral Model –
▫ Focuses on studying & understanding the different
behavior/trends amongst the variables. Examples, trend
analysis, co-relation, regression etc.
• Management Science Model –
▫ Based upon the principles of the management. Example,
budgetary systems, cost accounting, capital budgeting, inventory
management etc.
• Operations Research Model –
▫ Based on the different mathematical formulae.
▫ Represent the real life problems depending on the various
variables and the parameters expressed in the algebraic
equations form.
▫ Examples, linear programming, ABC analysis, mathematical
programming techniques, material requirement planning.
DSS software system/ (User Interface)
• Provides a user interface.
• Allows interaction between the users of the
system and the Decision Support System data –
base and the model – base.
• Helps in the creation, storage and the
retrieval of the models in the model – base.
• Integrates them with the data in the
Decision Support System data – base.
Key Differences: MIS vs DSS
DSS MIS
• Non-routine decisions • Routine decisions
▫ Often unique problems ▫ Monthly
• Requires data + ▫ Weekly
▫ Daily
human knowledge/
wisdom • Operational
• Subjective • Easy to automate
▫ Best choice is very • Often the best choice
unclear is obvious
MIS vs DSS: Different emphasis
DSS MIS
• Analyze specific • Performance info
problems ▫ More feedback driven
▫ How are we doing?
