presenting the digital self

3.Examine the influence of the internet to gender and

sexuality

4.Demonstrate responsible and appropriate ways of

presenting oneself or behaving online.
“ The world is at the tip of your fingers “
ONLINE IDENTITY
-It is the totality of a person’s
appearance,expression,behavior, and interaction within
the digital platform,particularly the internet.

-This is often created to engage in virtual communities

found in various websites and social networking sites.

-It is also a mere versions of the self that a person

projects in online interactions.
DIGITAL WORLD
-The articulation of the dominance of the use of technology in the
modern-day society.

DIGITAL REALITIES
- Interactions occur behind the screen
-People present themselves differently and create an image that
is favored and accepted in the digital world.
-This process of self-presentation enables the individual to control
other people’s perception to oneself, thereby reinforcing the
creation of online identity.
BELK(2013) in EXTENDED SELF in a DIGITAL WORLD
Presenting an identity online is akin to sharing the digital self in
cyberspace.

SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS

Provide people with tools which they can use to present
themselves more creatively to a public audience.

SELF-PRESENTATION
Refers to how people attempt to present themselves to control or
shape how others or what we call audience view them.

SELF-DISCLOSURE
It is the process of passing on information about yourself to
someone else , whether you intend to or not.
VALKENBURG and PETER

-Listed factors such as anonymity of one’s identity and

audiovisual anonymity,asynchronicity,
. and accesibility in online
communication that fosters more extensive self-disclosure and
a managed self-presentation of online identities.

-In “the internet enhanced self-disclosure

hypothesis”,suggests that since exposure to the internet and
virtual communities posters a feeling of connectedness and
well-being, they are more likely to disclose even intimate
information about themselves online.
WOOD ET AL. (2016)
They cited studies indicating that college students who consciously
enhances their online identity by projecting a positive disposition and
well-being in facebook are more likely to feel a greater subjective
well-being.

RIDLEY (2012) AND SULER (2004)

They would refer to this extensive online sharing as the disinhibition
effect where people feel so much freedom to express their true
selves without the fear of being seen or judge.

STRANGELOVE (2011)
Suggested that the reinforcement of intimate self-disclosure online
due to disinhibition not only refers to positive information but even to
negative information as well.
ONLINE SELF-EXPRESSION

It can indeed be therapeutic for some individual online

users because it provides an opportunity for self analysis
and positive or negative
BELK
He first introduced the concept of extended self in 1988.

He investigated the individual consumer behavior in the context of a

then emerging technological environment.

He theorized that a person’s concept of the self can be influenced by

certain digital technologies allowing for the creation of an extended
self which most often comes into play in the digital world.
FIVE ORIGINAL
FORMULATIONS OF THE
DIGITAL SELF
Dematerialization
Re-embodiment
Sharing
Co-construction of the self
Distributed Memory
SELF-REVELATION
-Self-revelation is the disclosure of one's character or motives,
especially inadvertently.

-Sharing relates most to the digital self and and sharing can now be
closely associated with self-revelation.

-Different posts or narratives that reveal about a person's material

possessions, recent purchases or even successes, facilitates self-
revelation in the digital world because the fear of being judged
becomes less likely and the act of posting both successes and
failures online is widely accepted norm.
LOSS OF
CONTROL
-Once a status is updated or a photo is posted becomes
readily accessible to the viewing public and the owner of
such a formation somehow loses control over this
information.
-To illustrate this loss of control, a widely shared post or photo that
becomes a trending topic online could result to either a positive or
negative outcome.
Positive: Social awareness
Negative: Misinterpretations

-For online users this loss of control poses no issue, it's still
become a narrative on the part of the individual user or sharer to
exercise more caution and responsibilities and disclosing
information online.
SHARED DIGITAL POSSESSIONS AND AGGREGATE
SELF

-“When things are jointly owned, they are also likely to be more relevant to the
aggregatelevel of self encompassing those with whom they are shared. In the digital
realm, however, we are part of imagined communities whose members may not be
personally known aside from the pseudonyms and online contributions” (Belk, 2013, p.
486)

-This seemingly joint possession of media and other information may create a feeling of
group identity and a sense of community among individuals even if they do not know
each other personally.

-In the digital platform, shared possession rather than single ownership among users is
desired since the primary goal is to facilitate access to media and encourage
communication.
SHARED SENSE OF (CYBER) SPACE
-Most media, files, and information in virtual communities
are shared rather than individually owned, and even the
concept of space becomes shared.

-This shared sense of space in the digital world allows

members to create and recreate the virtual spaces
according to their needs.
-RE-WORLDING- this is the process of creation in the virtual
environment.
-this somehow further reinforces the presentation of
an online self because it goes beyond the constraints of time and
space.
-This reimagined space becomes an actual place
where individuals can hangout and communicate with each other in a
shared feeling of belongness, even just being glued in their own
screens.

-As technologies evolved, people's perception also evolved.

-People's identities online are very much influenced and shaped by

the digital world, and this online identities also affect the way people
see themselves.
GENDER
AND
SEXUALITY
ONLINE
FACTORS EXISTING IN THE DIGITAL
PLATFORM
1. Anonymity

2. Asynchronicity

3. Accessibility
ANONYMITY
Describes situations where the acting person's identity is
unknown
ASYNCHRONICITY

It is the quality or state of being asynchronous

ACCESSIBILITY

It is the quality of being easy to approach, reach, enter,

speak with, use, or understand
-The more time and resources users spend time on
the internet, the more this virtual communities in
turn affect their psychosocial development in the
aspects of identity, intimacy, and even
sexuality.

-In studies conducted relating the effects of the

internet in the sexual development of adolescence
often revolve around concepts of sexual
exploration and online sexual solicitation.
SEXUAL EXPLORATION

-During this period, adolescents experience a range of

feelings and initiate behaviors that may put them at risk for
unwanted pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections, or
sexual coercion.

-Online communication and the voluminous amount of

information available on the internet enable individual users to
engage in sexual exploration.
ONLINE SEXUAL SOLICITATION

Online sexual solicitation occurs when children or

adolescents are asked to engage in sexual activities,
sexual talk, or to give personal sexual information on the
Internet (Mitchell, Wolak, & Finkelhor, 2007). Online sexual
solicitation can be wanted or unwanted.
INTERNET
-Internet helps keep individuals real identities from their
families and friends, they become more open and
expressive on sensitive sexual issues the that are often
shunned and normal face-to-face conversations.

-The blanket of anonymity on the internet facilitates

discussions on teenage sex, sexual orientations, and even
sex related health issues without the fear of being
discriminated against or judged, specially for gays and
lesbians who are often subject of gender discrimination of
attacks.
-The effect of the exchange of information and sentiments
among members of a virtual community are the following:
A. It could either change one's image of the sexual self entirely.
B. It could reinforce in existing image in extend it to her versions.

-It must be important to note that this kind of online behavior can be a
way to online sexual solicitation and also harassment
because obviously nobody ever knows who you are dealing with online.

-Caution must be exercised, specially and self-disclosures

surrounding certain sensitive topics because once a personal information
is shared online, you can easily fall into wrong hands.
Managing the Digital Self: Responsible
Online Self Presentation
-Online self-presentation may form part of your
freedom to express yourself always intended to be.

-The freedom to express oneself online necessitates a

responsibility not to cause any harm or damage to
others.
Before posting her sharing anything online, you may think
about the following:

a.) Is this post or story necessary?

b.) Is there a real benefit to this post or am i just making noise
online without purpose?
c.) Have we (as a family or parents/child) resolved this issue? An
issue still making worked out and the home, or one that is either
vulnerable or highly emotional, should not be made public.
d.) Is it appropriate? Does it stay within the boundaries of our
family values?
e.) Will this seem as funny in five, 10, or 15 years? Or is this post
better suited for sharing with a small group of family members? Or
maybe not at all?
