INTRODUCTION:
 INTRODUCTION TO STONE COLUMNS:

• It is the ground improvement technique.

• Stone column ground improvement involves adding vertical
columns of stone into the ground to a depth of at least 4m
below the ground surface.
• Stone columns are used to increase the load bearing
capacity of soil.
• Stone columns are arranged to support footings for
buildings.
• The stone columns are installed by creating a bore hole in
weak deposits. Bore hole is filled with granular
material/Concrete waste and compacted to the desired
strength.
• CONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUES:
1. Vibratory technique using vibroflot method
a) Wet top feed method b)Dry bottom feed method

2. Rammed method:
OBJECTIVE:
 To Study the effect of load settlement on Stone Columns in “COHESIVE
SOIL”(Black Cotton Soil).
 Comparative study of LENGTH on load carrying capacity of Stone
Columns.
 Comparative study of AREA (diameter) on load carrying capacity of Stone
Columns.

LITERATURE SURVEY:
Mohammed Fattah et.al(2017): They obtained a general equation by carrying statistical
analysis using SPSS program. The equation is used to estimate the bearing capacity of
floating stone column group installed in clays of different undrained shear strengths and
different diameter and length ratio
 Viresh Tadolge et.al (2021):To overcome this cohesive behaviour of soil they are using
stone column technique in which instead of using stone aggregate they are using
concrete waste which makes it economical. Also soil stabilization in the areas where
water table is high in that case other stabilization methods are not useful then stone
column is usefull. Refering to various research paper we came to know that the stone
column technique is trustable and also reduce settlement upto 30% to 60% also load
carrying capacity increased significantly hence soil bearing capacity get increased.Triaxial
loading frame test is carried out to determine the load settlement behaviour of floating
stone column prepared in cylindrical tank with varying diameter and length.
LITERATURE SURVEY:

Istuti Singh et.al (2019):Stone columns are used for the improvement of settlement and
bearing capacity of soft soils in reasonable fare and friendly towards the environment. In
present paper, a review to analyse the behavior of stone columns used in different types of
constructions such as oil storage tanks, embankments, buildings etc. The effect of various
diameters with various depths in ground also reviewed.
Sharad Kumar Soni et.at (2019):In this paper, test results represent the settlement of
reinforced soil bed decreases with increase of column diameters. The settlement reduction
ratio is a measure of ground improvement which increases with area replacement ratio. The
experimental and theoretical results values were compared as per IS15284 (Part 1): 2003.

Wani A. D et.al (2018): Test results are calculated with varying water content.
LITERATURE SURVEY:
Himmat sarvaiya (2021) :He examined the effect of length to diameter ratio of
floating stone column. The load vs settlement laboratory tests were conducted
with length and diameter ratio of stone columns and finding the corresponding
settlement behavior .This research shows that load carrying capacity of floating
stone column increases with the increasing length to diameter ratio of stone
column.
METHODOLOGY :
Soil sample collection(black cotton soil)

Properties/lab tests(index and engineering properties)

Design of stone columns.

Prototype/Model

Load v/s settlement analysis.

RESOURCE:

Geotechnical engineering laboratory

Building material and testing laboratory
OUTCOME AND APPLICATIONS:
EXPECTED OUTCOME:
To study the behavior under area and length considerations of load carrying capacity of BLACK
COTTON SOIL.

APPLICATIONS:
◦ Black cotton soil is deposited in major parts of north Karnataka. Constructing foundation in BLACK
COTTON SOIL is difficult .
◦ Stone Column is one of the Ground improvement techniques. By using the application of stone
columns we improve the soil stability.
