Coding Decoding

This document discusses different types of coding techniques: 1. Letter coding involves representing letters with other letters through techniques like shifting letters forward/backward in the alphabet, writing letters in reverse order, or using the position of letters in the alphabet. 2. Number coding assigns numerical code values to words, with alphabetical code letters assigned to the numbers. 3. Substitution coding uses different objects to represent code names. Sample questions with explanations are provided to illustrate these coding techniques.

CODING DECODING

Introduction

Types of Coding:

1) Letter Coding
A given set of letters is represented in a different set of letters.
Skipping letter in the forward or backward direction
Writing in reverse order – in part or in whole
Codes may be position of those letters in Alphabet
Ex – Word RUN is coded as SVO. How is LAY written ?
R+1+S
U+1=V
N+1=O
Ex – DELHI is written as CDKGH.. How is SUSPECT written ?
D–1=C
E – 1 = D and so on
Ex – COURAGE is written as UOCREGA. How will JOURNAL be written ?
When COURAGE is coded, letters are interchanged.
Closer look tell us the odd positions are interchanged.
Position 1 changes to 3 and vice versa
Position 5 changes to 7 and vice versa.
Introduction

Types of Coding:

2) Number Coding
Numerical code values are assigned to a word
Alphabetical code letters are assigned to the numbers.
Ex – If D =4 and COVER = 63, then BASIS = ?

Ex – If 15789 is written as XTZAL and 2346 is written as NPSU, how is 23549 written ?

Ex – If LD = 48 and SD = 76, the CODE for BET is ?

3) Substitution Coding
Different Objects are assigned to code names.
