OBJECTIVE

The objective of our project are:

• Proposing a ramp attachment design that makes the normal
wheelchair to climb the curbs on the streets and accessing the
buildings without ramp facility.
• Propose an economic way of improving the capabilities of manual
wheelchair.
INTRODUCTION
The manual wheelchairs are widely used because of its availability and economic
factors even if it faces the limitation of accessing curbs and stairs.
Some of the advanced electronic wheelchairs having the climbing feature but
those wheelchairs are not affordable to common people and not suitable for
daily usage in rough terrains.
Many assisting mechanisms have been developed to enable the manual wheel
chair to climb the curbs and having so many limitations and complexities
Literature Review
• The First wheelchair model evolved long back in 18th century, but rapid development in this field initiated
since mid of 20th century. Since then, many varieties of models had been designed, extending into broad
range of products. The project by Tadakamalla Shanmukh Anirudh et al.
• [1] involves the design of an ergonomically designed electric wheelchair for domestic use by Indian old
aged people. Stair climbing functionality is embedded in the design through its structure and mechanism.
• Anthropometric measures are considered in the dimensioning of seat. The frame and wheels are designed
and developed through the equations generated from the statistical data of dimensions of staircases in
Indian houses. Focus is laid on different parameters such as form, functionality, technology and
architecture of the product.
• According t review paper published by Mohammed Hayyan Al Sibai et al.
• [2], there are many forms for designing a smart wheelchair. Early smart wheelchairs were mobile robots to
which seats were added. Currently, most of developed smart wheelchairs are built on by modifying
commercially available power wheelchairs. Few smart wheelchairs are designed as “add-on” units that can
be attached to and removed from the underlying power wheelchair. All these designs are sharing the same
objectives which are: Easing the way the chairs are used, avoiding collisions as much as possible, increasing
travel distance and decreasing travel time
Wheelchair

A wheelchair is a chair with

wheels, used when walking is
difficult or impossible due to
illness, injury, problems related to
old age, or disability.
Ramp Attached Wheelchair
• Ramp is an inclined plane installed in
addition to or instead of stairs.
• Ramps are sloped pathways used both
inside and outside buildings used to
provide access between vertical levels.
• Ramps provide an alternative to stairs
for wheelchair users, people with
mobility issues and people with prams.
Design concept of Ramp Attached Wheelchair

• The proposed design is simple as it consists of two ramps with connecting

rods.
• The connecting rods were attached to the side frame of the wheel through a
small rod with rolling or sliding hole for it.
• The small rod can be either welded or clamped to the side frame of the
wheelchair.
• The ramp can be locked back to the side frame after the use.

• The ramps can be locked securely on the sides of wheelchair using a locking
nut and it can be removed for deploying.
• The ramp attachment can be operated
either by the user or accompanying
person when it requires.
• There is no need of lubrication and
Aluminum rod can slide smoothly
through the hole.
• The ramp attachment is fabricated with
aluminum and a rubber layer added to
the ramps for avoiding any slippage.
WORKING
• Initially the ramps on both sides unlocked by loosening the lock nuts and position
it according to the height of curb using the connecting rod.
• Once the ramps are firmly placed on the curb initiate the climbing process by self
or with the help of accompanying person.
• The slider mechanism facilitates the climbing of wheelchair through the ramp.

• Once the wheelchair landed safely the ramps will be on the backside of the
wheel chair.
• The ramps can be then take upside for putting back on the side frame and locked
firmly with the lock nuts.

ramp
Fabrication of Ramp Attached Wheelchair
• The ramp attachment is fabricated with inexpensive and light-
weight materials made them easy to operate and maintain.
• The design can be improvised by adding pneumatic cylinders for
automatic folding and deployment of ramp attachment.
PURPOSE
To make an affordable ramp attached wheelchair

Easy to use

eliminates the difficulty of climbing over curbs for people using

wheelchair
ADVANTAGES
Most economical way of adding ramp feature to
any available wheelchairs.
Removes the difficulty of disabled people to move around.
Can be used in home for transferring old age people from room to vehicles with less
effort.
Can be adopted for shopping trolleys.
Cost effective
Less maintenance
Flexible to modifications
APPLICATIONS
• Ramp attached wheelchair makes autonomy that permits you to meander
unreservedly instead of needing help.
• Ramp attached wheelchair makes usability to get in and out of a vehicle
without assistance.
• to climb the curbs on the streets and accessing the buildings without ramp

facility.
