Project Management: - Dr. Gyanesh Kumar Sinha Associate Professor - Operations and Analytics

Project management involves coordinating activities to achieve specific goals within constraints of cost, time, and quality. Projects are temporary endeavors with a defined start and end, aimed at creating a unique product or service. Examples include construction, new product development, research projects, and business implementations. Project management objectives are to plan, coordinate, control complex activities, foresee uncertainties, and complete tasks on time and within budget. Projects can be classified by product vs work nature (tangible vs intangible) or application area (construction, research, etc.). Delays can be internal due to resources or external due to political, environmental, or approval factors.

Associate Professor –Operations and Analytics
What is Project
Management?

• Project is a unique venture with a

beginning and an end, conducted by
people to meet established goals
within the parameters of cost,
schedule and quality.
• Projects are goal oriented, involves
coordinated undertaking of
interrelated activities, are of finite
duration, and are all, to a degree
unique.
• Project is a temporary endeavour
undertaken to create a unique
product, service or result
Complex, one-time process

Limited by budget,
schedule, and resources
Elements of
Project Developed to resolve a clear
cut goal or set of goals

Customer focused
Some of the typical projects are
• Construction of a multi-storied building
• Construction of Ship
• Construction of a dam/bridge
• Commissioning a power plant
• Construction of roadways/highways
• New product development
• Design and development of a software
Examples • Research to develop a new technology
• Manufacturing of products
• Launching a satellite
• Making a movie
• Conduct of examination in a
university/institute/school
• Launching a product in market
Objectives of Project Management

Plan, coordinate and Foresee or predict as many

control the complex and as uncertainties and
diverse activities problems as possible

Complete the project tasks

Complete all activities on
within planned/authorized
or before the scheduled
expenditure
The classification of projects
can be done in two ways
• Based on product vs
Types of nature of work
Project • Based on application
areas
A. Project classification based on Product Vs
Nature of Work
• Tangible-craft project
-Creation of physical product resulting from craftwork that is
essentially repetitive in nature
-Projects are usually costly, but the resources are predictable and
controllable
[Ex –Products in daily use like cars, appliances etc.]
• Tangible-intellect project
-Creation and assembly of a new piece of hardware or other
material product –something not done before
- Projects may be costly, but the resources are not very predictable
[Ex-A new windmill to generate power]
A. Project classification based on Product Vs
Nature of Work……..

• Intangible-craft project
-It involves the assembly of a physical entity, but the value is in its content, not in
the article itself
-Likely to involve copying and updating from a previous version
-Resource requirements are predictable
[Ex –Updating version of a software product, conducting national/state election]
• Intangible-intellect project
A non-repetitive, creative effort to develop a new intellectual property
Projects are probably relatively less costly, but resources are highly unpredictable
[Ex- Propounding a new theory or writing a book]
Project Classification Based on Application Area

• Construction Projects
[IT park, Manufacturing car, Constructing expressway etc.]
• Research Projects
[Business modeling, Algorithm to manage parallel computers, Economic model
etc.]
• Re-engineering Projects
[Direct beneficiary transfer system (DBT), Computerized land records, Improved
production process etc.]
• Procurement Projects
[Outsourcing talent acquisition, outsourcing payroll processing, Contract
manufacturing etc.]
• Business Implementation Projects
[Implementation of ERP software in a university, Installing E-Commerce system for
a chain of stores, launching a product in a market etc.]
Types of Project Delays

Internal delays
• Materials and subassemblies
• Equipment
• Manpower
• Money
External delays
• Political stability of the state
• Terrorism
• Culture of the people in the neighbourhood
• Availability of water and electricity
• Obtaining necessary clearances/certificates from the authorities
• Natural calamities
