THE EFFECT OF RESIN FINISH ON THE
DIMENSIONAL STABILITY OF COTTON
KNITTED FABRIC
INTRODUCTION
• Knitted fabric is characterized by its elastic
properties
• Deformation in shape of fabric occurs due
to external applied force
• In theory fabric would retain its original
shape and dimensions but practically its
not possible
Need for the test
• Residual shrinkage in fabric is closely related to
the deformation of the yarn making the fabric
• If natural shape of the yarn in the fabric is the
same as the shape of the loop in the fabric, no
dimensional change would occur
• Greater difference between the two – greater
change in dimension
• To reduce this change , if not completely
removing it, fabric must be relaxed completely
• Resin finish is used to relax the non
thermoplastic fibers
• This helps in reducing the amount of
shrinkage to a great extent
EXPERIMENT
• Commercially produced plain knitted fabric
from combed cotton with four different
yarn’s densities are taken
• Before application of resin, each sample is
cleaned and peroxide bleached
• Samples are dried in an oven at 70 degree
celcius for 5mins after the application of
resin
SAMPLING AND MEASUREMENT
• Set of six samples are prepared for all the
four different fabrics
• Each set has a grey sample, cleaned and
bleached sample and four different
samples with different levels of
concentration of resin used in treatment
• All measurements carried out after
conditioning under atmospheric conditions
for 48 hours
DEGREE OF SET
• The degree of set ranges in value from 0 to 1
• 1.0 means free yarn still holds the same shape
of the loop as when it was in fabric
• Zero means free yarns return to its original
shape as pulled from the package before
knitting
• A perfect degree of set 1.0 may not be possible,
but a zero degree of set is just as unlikely
It is calculated by…
Degree of set = L0 – LU
• L0 – L F
• L0- length of unraveled yarn
• LU-length of crimped yarn after unraveling
• LF- distance covered by the yarn in the
fabric along the course line
INFERENCE
Effect of RESIN FINISH on the
DEGREE OF SET of the yarn
• Concentration of resin is directly
proportional to the degree of set
i.e. degree of set increases with the
increase in resin level
• The degree of set approaches the value of
1.0 as the resin content increases
Effect of RESIN FINISH on the
DIMENSIONAL STABILITY
• Dimensional stability is related to the degree of
set, which in turn is related to the resin finish
• Concentration of resin is directly
proportional to the dimensional stability
• Higher resin finish - higher degree of set
therefore less dimensional changes, and hence
more dimensional stability
• Resin finishing imparts shape retention to
the fabric
Relationship between DEGREE OF
SET and SHRINKAGE
• Shrinkage level of a fabric due to washing
is related to the application of resin finish
• The level of shrinkage of the fabric
decrease with the increase in the degree
of set in the yarn
i.e. shrinkage is inversely proportional
to the degree of set
CONCLUSIONS
• Resin treatment increases the degree of set
• Resin treatment reduces dimensional change in
the fabric
• Increase in Degree of set, reduces shrinkage
• More dimensional stability means less residual
shrinkage
• Resin finish increases the degree of set
which in turn increases the dimensional
stability
