A printer is a device that converts digital data into a physical printed document. There are two main types of printers - impact and non-impact. Impact printers use pins or hammers to press ink onto paper, while non-impact printers form characters without physical contact. Common impact printers include dot matrix, line, band, and daisy wheel printers. Common non-impact printers are laser and inkjet printers. A plotter is a specialized printer used for large format drawings.

Printer
• A printer is an output device that can convert
electrical signals into printed characters on papers and provide a permanent visual record of data. • The result that we get through printer is called printout or hardcopy. • Generally, printers fall into two categories: impact and non-impact Impact printer
• An impact printer creates an image by using
pins or hammers to press an inked ribbon against the paper. The most common types of impact printer are: a) Dot matrix printer b) Line printer c) Band printer d) Daisy wheel printer a. Dot Matrix printer • A dot-matrix printer creates an image by using a mechanism called a print head, which contains a cluster of short pins arranged in one or more columns. • On receiving instruction from PC, the printer can push any of the pins out in any combination. • By pushing pins in various combinations, the print head can create alphanumeric characters. Dot matrix (cont)
• When pushed out form cluster, pins end strike
a ribbon, which is held in place between the print head and paper. • When the pins strike the ribbon, they press ink from the ribbon onto a piece of paper. • The more pins that a print head contains, the higher the printers resolution. • The lowest resolution printers have only nine pins, the highest resolution printers have twenty-four pins. • The speed of dot-matrix printers is measured in characters per second(cps). • The slowest dot-matrix printers create 50 to 70 cps; the fastest print more than 500 cps. b.Line printer • This special type of impact printer works like dot matrix but uses a special wide print head that can print an entire line of text at one time.
• Line printer do not offer high resolution but are
incredibly fast. The fastest can print 3000 lines of text per minute. c. Band Printer • In these printers a rotating band is use, embossed with alphanumeric characters. • To print a character, the machine rotates the band to the desired character, then a small hammer taps the band, pressing the character against a ribbon. • A good quality band printer can generate 2000 lines of text per minute. Band printer d. Daisy wheel • This type of printer are nearly obsolete ( finish)., but it can sill be found where older system are used. • These printer use a spinning wheel with a characters embossed around its edge. • A hammer strike the wheel from behind, pressing a character against a ribbon. • Daisy wheel printer can create clean text, but they cannot print graphic. • They are very slow in comparison to other printers. Daisy wheel 2.Non- impact printers: Non impact printers, used almost everywhere now, are faster and quieter than impact printers because they have fewer moving parts. No impact printers form characters and images without direct physical contact between the printing mechanism and the paper. Two types of no impact printers often used with microcomputers are laser printers and ink-jet printers. a.Laser Printer • As their name implies laser is at heart of this printer. • A CPU and memory is built into the printer to interpret the data that its receives from computer and to control laser. • Just as electron gun in a monitor can target any pixel, the laser printer can aim at any point on a drum, creating electrical charges. • Drum is a rotating drum, which is the organic photo conductor. Laser printer (cont) • Toner, which is composed of tiny particles of oppositely charged ink, sticks to the drum in the places the laser has charged. • Then, with pressure and heat, the toner is transferred off the drum onto paper. • The amount of memory that laser printers contain determines the speed at which documents are printed. Mechanism of laser Printer Laser Printer (Cont) Laser Printer (cont)
• The most common laser printers have a
resolutions of 300 or 600 dpi, , but some high- end models have resolution of at least 1200 dpi or 1800 dpi. • Single-color (black) laser printers typically can produce between four and i6 pages of text a minute. if you are printing graphics, the output can be a great slower. b. Ink- jet printer
• Ink jet printers create an image directly on a
paper by spraying ink through tiny nozzles. • Compared to laser printer, the operating cost of an ink jet printer is relatively low. • The only part that needs routine replacement is the ink cartridge, which ranges in price from $ 20 to $ 35. Ink-jet Printer Plotters
• A plotters is a special kind of output device.
• It is like a printer because it produces images on paper, but the plotter typically is used to print large-format images, such as construction or engineering drawings created in a CAD system. Types of Plotters
• Table plotter( or flatbed plotter)
Use two robotic arms, each of which holds a set of colored ink pens or pencils. The two arms work in concert, operating at right angles as they draw on a stationary piece of paper. b. Roller Plotter • A variation on the table plotter is the roller plotter (also known as drum plotter) which uses only one drawing arm but moves the paper instead of holding it flat and stationary. The drawing arm moves side to side as the paper is rolled back and forth through the roller.
