A HISTORIC TRAGEDY WAS BORN

• On the night of April 14, 1912, it was in the middle of Atlantic ocean.
• The ice berg warnings never reached Captain Smith or the officer on the
bridge.
• Ice-berg spotted! They tried to turn Titanic away from the iceberg, but it was
too late.
• Approximately 37 seconds later the greatest maritime disaster in history began.
Then slowly she started to sink into her watery grave.
• Titanic sank more than two miles down to the ocean floor, where no driver
could go alone.
SURVIVORS

• Only over 700 people manage to get on to a boat and survive.

• Two-thirds of her (Titanic) passengers and crew went down with the ship:
 First class- 60.5% survived
 Second class- 41.75% survived
 Third class- 24.5% survived
 Crew- 23.5% survived
• The people who did manage to get on a boat were picked up by the closet ship
Carpathia.
• 2 dogs were also saved from the Titanic.
WHY SO MANY DEATHS?

• There weren’t enough life boats for even half the crew onboard.
• The boats were not fully loaded when they launched, there was one boat which
had 12 people on when it was built for 40.
• There was still 2 lifeboats empty when Titanic sank.
• A lifeboat drill was Originally planned to take place on board the Titanic on
April 14, 1912 but it had been cancelled.
• There was a closer ship, but the Captain of that ship was asleep.
AFTER 73 YEARS TITANIC WAS FOUND

• 1st September 1985, a submersible named “Alvin” was sent underwater to capture the images
of the ship wreck.
• Titanic’s boiler was the first part of titanic to be discovered.
• Some of the artifacts recovered were:
 Silverware
 Plates
 Chairs
 Letters
 Currency
 Jewelleries
 Clothing
 Menus
The Voyage was very much anticipated around the globe. The white star lines employee is
believe to have said that “even god himself couldn’t sink the ship”.
The sinking was a wake-up call- a realization that technology can only go so far.
