History is the study of past social life in all of its facets. It's
the tale of man through time, a fact-based investigation into
the past. Through history, we can learn how past societies,
systems, governments, cultures and technologies were built,
how they operated, and how they have changed.

It is essential because it helps us make sense of the world we

live in today. We can make fair predictions about what will
happen next in today's environment by looking at historical
economic and cultural patterns.
PRIMARY SOURCE VS
SECONDARY SOURCE

Primary Sources are immediate, first-hand accounts of a topic, from people

who had a direct connection with it. It serves as an original source of
information about the topic. Letters, diaries, minutes, photographs, artifacts,
interviews, and sound or video recordings are examples of primary sources.

Secondary Sources are one step removed from primary sources, though they
often quote or otherwise use primary sources. Secondary sources are
works that analyze, assess or interpret an historical event, era, or phenomenon,
generally utilizing primary sources to do so. Secondary sources can include
books, journal articles, speeches, reviews, research reports, and more.

Pantayong Pananaw is a discourse
within the indigenous tradition that
was developed by Dr. Zeus Salazar.
It is a programmatic discourse
developed as a response to the
westernized perspective of the
study of Philippine history and
historiography. It is made so that
we can further embrace our original
identity as a Filipino.
LIFE IN PRE-COLONIAL
PHILIPPINES

Contrary to foreign reports, our forefathers were not merely some

primitive, jungle-living savages. In truth, the Philippines had a highly
developed civilization long before the arrival of the Spaniards. Our
forefathers possessed a sophisticated functional civilization and a
culture filled with works of arts and literature. The pre-colonial
Filipinos educated themselves quite well using the old method of
writing known as the baybayin, to the point that when the Spanish
came, they were surprised to see that the Filipinos had a literacy rate
greater than Madrid! Aside from farming, hunting, weapon-making,
and seafaring,
pre-colonial Filipinos experimented — and succeeded — in a variety
of other occupations.
LIFE IN COLONIAL
PHILIPPINES
The Spanish colony in the Philippines was centered on Manila. Much
of Spain's foreign trade in Asia was tied to Manila in some way, and
most of the wealthy and influential had houses here. The fortified city
of Intramuros was home to the Spaniards in Manila. Within the walls
lived the governor, administrators, friars, merchants, military officials,
priests, and soldiers from Spain, as well as some of their families. A
polyglot community of Filipinos, Chinese, Japanese, and other
immigrants lived beyond the gates. What happened in the Philippines
paralleled what occurred in Latin America. The Spanish grabbed
property and developed massive plantations, turning landowners
become millionaires. Other tribes, such as the Igorot, fought back. The
Spanish burnt Igorot
towns, ruined their harvests and raped their women, yet in 350
years of Spanish occupation the Igorot were never vanquished.
LIFE IN
CONTEMPORARY
PHILIPPINES

The Philippines gained formal independence on July 4, 1946, after

suffering catastrophic war devastation. The most striking aspect of the
newly established Philippine republic, according to a number of
historians, was its ongoing economic and military dependency on the
United States. In the Philippines, independence changed the structure
of municipal and provincial politics dramatically. The electorate
increased, campaigns got more expensive, and politicians became
increasingly reliant on top-down funding distribution via one or more
national political parties. Those cash largely went through the state’s
ruling party, with much of it coming from the national treasury
or directly from American aid and international finances.

I may demonstrate my interest in Philippine history
by reading historical books and other written works.
I'd like to learn more so that I can comprehend why
our country is in this situation.

The best way to promote and preserve our own

culture is to first acknowledge our roots and then
become knowledgeable about our culture.

After having a grasp to what is there to learn in our

own culture, I will tell my peers and family what I
have learned to spread awareness.

Participate in traditional cultural performances during

certain occasions or activities, such as national
independence day celebrations.

History has always been very
interesting to me, that is why I am very
thrilled and curious to have a grasp of
what is in this subject to learn. I have

I can pass this course if I use all of
my time to complete the course’s
prerequisites. Not only will I put my
intellect to it, but I will also put my heart
into it in order to take a position on the
many topics that are circulating in the
country. The most crucial aspect
of this subject is putting it into
practice. Learning is meaningless
if you don't grasp what you’re
learning.
