Development Vision/

 Growth & Transformation Plan - Transformative

economic growth to achieve middle income status

 Climate Resilient Green Economy Strategy - Ensuring

Green development (net zero emissions) Path across
economic sectors

CONTEXT CNTD..

2.76 billion tons of C (Yitebitu Moges et al ., 2010)

Carbon tower of the Horn?

The remnant high forests are

found in Western and South
western part of the country
PROJECT CONTEXT
More than 70% of the
high forests are found in
Oromia
WHY WE CONCERN FOR SUSTAINABILITY OF FORESTS IN
•OROMIA
The forest in Oromia provide critical
ecosystem services to the region, the
country and the world:

 Serves as water tower

 harbors globally important

biodiversity with endangered
endemic species
 Original habitat for wild varieties
of Arabica coffee
WHY WE CONCERN …CNTD…
• Forests maintain other land uses

• Forests have high livelihoods

value
THE THREAT
Forest loss and degradation is
increasing in Oromia.
 501, 210 ha of forest was lost
between 2000 and 2013 or around
38,554 ha per year

 5, 259 ha A/R per annum

 65 million tCO2e emitted into the

atmosphere between 2000 and 2013 or
around 5 million tons annually

 annual atmospheric removal of

734,916 tCO2e due to A/R
