GERUND

Ing –form in English


Adjective (active participle)
Boring, exciting, starving, exhausting,

 Noun (Gerund)

 Verb ( continuous)
 She is singing a song.
 They were visiting to Jakarta.
Analyze the following sentences! Which one are not
gerund?

1. Brushing our teeth is important.


2. One of his duties is attending meetings.
3. She is attending meetings.
4. Can you sneeze without opening your mouth?
5. We stop complaining.
6. My best friend’s favorite activity, shopping, has made her
spend much money.
7. The girl standing in front of you is your classmate.
8. She is singing a song.
9. The lecturer teaches English with interesting ways.
 1,2,3,4,5, = gerund ,
 6, 8 = present/active participle/ adjective ---
 7 = Verb ing (continue)
The gerund looks exactly the same as a present
participle, but it is useful to understand the
difference between the two. The gerund always has
the same function as a noun ( although it looks like
a verb)
1. Gerund as the subject of the sentence

2. As the complement of the verb ‘’to be’’

 My hobby is / was swimming.

3. Gerund after preposition/ object of preposition

 They discussed an article about Smoking.


 I come here for buying hand-made products.
 Can you sneeze without opening your mouth?
 She is good at painting.
 We arrived in Semarang after driving all night.
 I try to love you without hurting you.
 I will love you with trying to make you happy.
 By being your friend, I feel excited.
 I am afraid of loosing you.
 I am not fond of studying alone.
