INTRODUCTION
Designing is the process of converting an idea into an object,
product or a system. CAD(Computer Aided Design) is a tool
that can be used for design & drafting activities.
AutoCAD is sophisticated CAD Software that is
synonymous with engineering drafting. The concept of
AutoCAD evolved way back in the 1980’s, when engineers and
architects were seeking to harness the power of newly
introduced personal computers to reduce the drafting time.
AutoCAD was formally launched in December 1982 by
Autodesk, a leader in 3D design, engineering and
entertainment software. Simply put, AutoCAD enables
engineers, designers and architects to produce 2D & 3D
models using computers.
History
 AutoCAD was derived from a program that began
in 1977, and then released in 1979 called
interactCAD, also referred to in early Autodesk
documents as Micro CAD, which was written prior
to Autodesk’s formation by Autodesk cofounder
Michael Riddle.
 It comes to India in 1992.
 The 2019 release marked the ninth consecutive
year for Mac. The native file format of AutoCAD
is .dwg.
Features of Electrical AutoCAD
Some of the features of AutoCAD are discussed below:-
 Powerful Drafting: Built primarily as a drafting tool, AutoCAD offers
unparallel drafting capabilities.
 Analyze Object Details: The features included in AutoCAD allow in
depth analysis and visualization of 2D & 3D models.
 Plug-ins: Since AutoCAD is extremely popular, there is a huge
number of plug-ins that are available which make the software more
useful & friendly.
 Integration: AutoCAD allows API integration with spreadsheets,
document editors & other utilities. This is extremely useful while
sharing the output of the software.
 Storage and accessibility: AutoCAD files can be saved on a computer
or archived in any storage media. Software files occupy lesser storage
space as compared storage space required for keeping manually
drafted paper drawings.

Command: ZOOM (enter)
o PAN: Allows you to move your view point around the drawing without changing the
magnification factor.
Command: PAN (enter)
Modifying commands
The fundamental commands to edit a drawing are:
Move- Moves selected object to another location about a base point.
Rotate- Rotates selected object through a specified angle about a base
point.
Copy- Creates one or more copies of selected objects at another location.
Mirror- Creates a mirror image of the selected objects about a specified
line.
Array- This command creates multiple copies of selected objects in
rectangular or polar form.
Erase- This command deletes the selected entities.
Oops- This command retrieves all objects erased by the last erase and after
executing block or Wblock command.
Break- This command erases a portion of line, arc, circle or a 2D polyline
between two selected points.
 Extend- This command extends the lines, polylines and arcs to a
boundary edge which can be a line, polyline, arc or circle.
 Offset- This command creates a parallel single copy of line, arc, circle,
rectangle, polygon, or 2D polyline at a given offset distance.
 Stretch- The STRETCH command can either lengthen entities or
shorten them, and thus after their shapes.
 Trim- This command trims the object that extend beyond a required
point of intersection.
 Scale- The scale command allows to shrink or enlarge the already
existing drawing objects about a base point by specifying a scale factor.
 Explode- This command breaks a polyline into its individual
segments.
 U- The U command reverses the effects of a series of previously used
commands and hence allows back-stepping.
Advantages
Striker Systems sheet metal fabrication products are available as a plug-in to AutoCAD
or, for non-AutoCAD users, as a stand-alone solution based on the AutoCAD OEM
Engine. Either way, this combination provides a unique CAD/CAM environment with
features not found in many conventional manufacturing products.
 Removal of Data Translations

Striker Systems provides a truly integrated CAD/CAM solution that supports the entire
manufacturing process from initial part design through the generation of NC programs
with no data translations required. And unlike many manufacturing software products
with limited design capability, Striker Systems includes an advanced engineering system
for the most demanding sheet metal design requirements.
 Solid Works / Solid Edge / Inventor Compatibility

The industry is rapidly embracing 3D solid modeling technology. Being based on

Autodesk’s industry standard DWG file format, Striker Systems offers a level of
compatibility not found in other manufacturing solutions. Many products, such as
Inventor and Solid Works, support Striker’s standard DWG file format directly. And
Striker also offers direct OLE links into Solid Works, Inventor and Solid Edge for
seamless sharing of data.
Industry Standard Translators

Many Striker Systems clients must accept drawings from a variety of sources. In the event it is
necessary to import data from (or export data to) another CAD software, Striker Systems relies
on the same industry standard DXF, IGES, and STEP translators that are found in AutoCAD.
Autodesk is the author of the DXF file format and therefore defines this standard. And because
AutoCAD is the most popular CAD software in the world, it is a benchmark for the development
of translators by many other CAD software organizations. You are guaranteed the highest level
of compatibility in the industry.

 Reduced Training Time/Cost

Both the AutoCAD based and stand-alone Striker Systems products provide an enhanced user
interface that will be immediately recognizable to individuals familiar with AutoCAD. They
will readily adapt to the Striker environment thereby minimizing the learning curve. And for
organizations that use AutoCAD as their engineering solution, it is not necessary for employees
to learn multiple operating environments as they would with separate CAD and CAM solutions.

 Rapid Product Advancements

Unlike the developers of stand-alone manufacturing products, the development team at Striker
Systems is not forced to continually maintain and advance an underlying graphics database. The
Striker graphics database is an AutoCAD engine, the world’s de facto standard CAD solution.
APPLICATIONS
 AutoCAD as an architectural planning tool: It comes with a user-interface with built-in
design lay-outs. The lay-outs contain numerous templates specially designed for architectural
planning and building construction. The latest versions of AutoCAD come with analytical
tools. The tools can analyze the components of the building to troubleshoot stress and load
levels of building supports. AutoCAD enables architects to design, plan, execute and analyze
the strength of a building, at design stage level.
 AutoCAD as an engineering drafting tool: You can use AutoCAD to draw accurate 2D
drawings for any engineering domain and also use AutoCAD to render to 3D models to help in
visualization of the end product. It is useful for Civil, Mechanical and Electrical systems. It
helps engineers to design, analyze and solve design issues resulting in accurate designs.
 AutoCAD as a graphic design tool: AutoCAD has innate features that enable users to
plan and map out spaces and take advantage of the space available. It can be used
simultaneously with 3D Max and various other application softwares including animation tools.
 AutoCAD in 3D Printing: For a 3D print of an object, one has to choose the object, get a
virtual 3D representation and then feed it to the 3D printer. A 3D print has its own
advantages for designers and this is where AutoCAD helps them. It ensures file
compatibility so that designs can be exported to various preferred formats.
 AutoCAD in the fashion industry: Every pattern and design of jewellery does not come by
chance; it is the result of careful planning and designing. AutoCAD has the tools necessary
for planning intricate designs for manufacture of jewellery, toys and other delicate objects.
 AutoCAD as industrial design tool: AutoCAD helps to reduce manufacturing costs as it
saves time and efforts required for manual designing.
