factors affecting climate
FACTORS AFFECTING TEMPERATURE

distance above
the mean sea
level
Pressure
Changes with altitude
Highest atmospheric pressures= cold regions
lowest pressures =tropical warm
environments associated with hurricanes
and typhoons
FACTORS AFFECTING TEMPERATURE
Ocean currents
• Stream of water that
flows in a definite path
• Ocean currents traveling
toward the equator are
cold water currents
Seasons
DRY
November - May
WET
June - October
Each season is
characterized by
different climates
Köppen climate classification
firstpublished by the German-Russian
climatologist Wladimir Köppen in 1884
Divides climates into five main groups
A (tropical)
B (dry)
C (temperate)
D (continental)
E (polar)
KOPPEN CLASSIFICATION OF
CLIMATE
Tropical Climate – warm all year round, very high
precipitation
Dry Climate – hot summers, cool winters, very low
precipitation
Temperate Climate – warm summers, mild winters,
precipitation, humid
Continental Climate- warm summers, cold winters,
moderate precipitation
Polar Climate – cold all year round, minimal precipitation
Climate Types in the Philippines (refer to page 175-
176)
Climate Type Description Regions/Areas
1 Dry season from November to May Ilocos Region, Central
wet season from June to October Luzon, Metro Manila, and
Zambales
2 No dry season but with rainfall from Bicol Region, Samar, Leyte
November to January and Eastern Mindanao
3 Seasons are not too pronounced but may Cagayan, Isabella, Mountain
be dry from November to April or wet Province and Nueva Vizcaya
during the rest of the year
4 Rainfall is evenly distributed throughout Batanes, Northeastern
the year Luzon, parts of Bicol Region
and western part of Leyte
FACTORS AFFECTING
PRECIPITATION
Prevailing Winds
Blow more often from a certain
direction than from any other
direction
Warm air can hold more moisture
than cold air
Mountain Ranges
affects the amount of precipitation
at a particular location which act as
a barrier to prevailing winds
Mountain Ranges
Windward side Leeward side
side of the has
little precipitation
mountain which and dry climate
faces the wind verylittle
this side has precipitation
cold, wet
mountain
9.2 Natural Causes of Climate
Change
Pangaea
Asteroid
Impact
Glaciers
Earth’s tilt
Scientistsclaimed that the tilt of
Earth’s axis slowly changed from 22.1
degrees to 24.5 degrees and back
again
9.3 Global Climate Phenomenon
El Niño vs La Niña
Greenhouse Effect
Some Effects of Global Warming
1. Melting of Glaciers 7. Effect on
2. Climate Change Agriculture
3. Rise in Droughts 8. Unexpected Heat
