Counseling for students

What is Counseling for students?

• Student Counseling Cell aims to help students


become self-aware and reach their highest
potential while dealing with anxiety and stress.
The counseling cell provides a happy and
comfortable environment for students to discuss
their problems regarding their academic and
social life.
 
What student counselors are and what they do to students?

 Student Counselors are the professionals that help students,


who are trained in the art of listening, should be able to guide
the conversation while being supportive of the students’ feelings
and opinions
• Academically - They are helping students in all levels who
have difficulty keeping up with the class.
• Socially - They help students to socialize.
• Personally - They are the ones who are responsible for listening
to students academically, emotionally, Socially and behavioral
concerns in an open and nonjudgmental way.
 They can also help the students for their futures.
 They are the ones who solve problems in and around the school.
Purpose for Counseling the Students

• The purpose of counseling should be to provide


valuable life-lessons to the students so
that they may become professionals in
their career. Students who get counseling are
able to choose between different careers and can
prepare themselves for a particular field
according to their education and interests.
Skills Needed for School Counselors
 Must Show compassion and Empathy, Qualities that
when combined with listening skills help them to
understand student needs.
 
• Empathy - They should have the ability to understand
and share the feelings of another.
• Good listener - Communicating with children would be
more effective when a counselor is also a good listener
and that is one of the good attributes of being school
counselors but it won’t be enough without sincerity.
For example;
• When talking with young children who are
affected by trauma, regardless of how small the
incident may seem, are more likely to confess in
adults who make an effort to be relatable without
minimizing their experience and opinions.
Skills Needed for School Counselors

• Patience and Sense of humor - Counselors


should make students more calm and
comfortable in front of the student or school
counselors.
For example;
• When the students have difficulty explaining
how they feel, counselors should attain more
patience and sometimes they should do informal
conversation to make the atmosphere lively and
not awkward.
Goals of School Counseling

• The major goals of counseling are to promote


personal growth and to prepare students to
become motivated workers and responsible
citizens.
• Recognize problems with learning and develop coping
skills.
• Identify and express positive feelings and behaviors
needed for successful learning.
• Demonstrate how effort and persistence affect learning.
• Apply study skills necessary for academic success at each
grade level.
