Lesson 1.2: Arithmetic Sequences and Series
LESSON 1.2
Arithmetic Sequences and Series
OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, you should be able to:
1. illustrate an arithmetic sequence;
2. determine arithmetic means and nth term of an arithmetic
sequence;
3. find the sum of the terms of a given arithmetic sequence; and
4. solve problems involving arithmetic sequence, series, and means
Arithmetic Sequences and Series
A sequence in which a successive term is found by
adding a constant value, called the common
difference to the previous term is called an
arithmetic sequence or arithmetic progression.
where
is the nth term
is the first term
n is the position of the term
d is the common difference
Arithmetic Sequences and Series
The period between full moons has been observed to be
29.53 days. If the full moon of the year occurs 5.62 into the
year (the sixth day of the year), when will the tenth full moon
of the year occur?
The tenth full moon of the year will occur on the 272nd day of
the year.
Arithmetic Sequences and Series
The sum of the terms in an arithmetic sequence forms an arithmetic series.
An arithmetic series can be defined by the equation:
where
is the sum of the sequence
is the nth term
is the first term
n is the position of the term
Arithmetic Sequences and Series
The sum of the terms in an arithmetic sequence forms an arithmetic
series.
If the first term is given and the common difference can be
identified, but the last term is not given, the arithmetic
series can be defined by the equation:

A theater has 40 seats in the first row, 42 seat in the
second row, increasing by 2 seats per row for a total of 20
rows. How many seats are there in the theater?
