The key takeaways are that electromagnetic waves have properties of wavelength, frequency and velocity and can be classified based on their frequency in the electromagnetic spectrum. James Clerk Maxwell predicted electromagnetic waves and formulated the electromagnetic theory. Heinrich Hertz demonstrated that electromagnetic waves can be generated, transmitted and detected.

Electromagnetic waves are disturbances in electric and magnetic fields that propagate through space as oscillating waves transporting energy. They have properties of wavelength, frequency and velocity and include visible light as well as invisible waves like radio waves, microwaves, infrared, ultraviolet, x-rays and gamma rays.

James Clerk Maxwell, a Scottish scientist, predicted the existence and characteristics of electromagnetic waves in 1865. He formulated the electromagnetic theory which stated that a changing electric field induces a magnetic field and vice versa. This unified electricity, magnetism and light as manifestations of the same phenomenon.

Electromagnetic waves are disturbances
produced by accelerating charged
particles, such as vibrating electrons, that
cause electric field E and magnetic field

Hertzian waves
In 1886, Hertz showed how
electromagnetic waves can be
generated and detected using a
device called the Hertz Apparatus
Consist of an induction coil with a primary coil A and a
secondary coil B. The secondary coil was connected to
tWb metal balls that were separated by an air gap
(marked as O). When an alternating current was applied
in A, a high voltage was induced in B, generating sparks
between the metal balls. These sparks across the gap
sent out electromagnetic waves.

To detect the generated waves, Hertz bent a

piece of wire, creating a loop with a short gap
(marked as P) between its ends. The loop
functioned as a detector and was placed a
distance away from the oscillating spark. Hertz
observed that whenever sparks were produced
in O, a spark also occurred in P. This indicated
that waves sent by the induction coil could be

questions that follow.
Electromagnetic waves are radiations in the
form of heat and light

Electromagnetic energy, which

propagate in space at the speed of
light.
Light is an electromagnetic wave visible to the human eye. It is
composed of a band of colors that is under the visible range of the
electromagnetic spectrum.
Beyond the ends of this color band (red and violet) are other types of electromagnetic
radiation that are invisible to the human eye—radio waves microwaves, infrared waves,
ultraviolet rays, X-rays, and gamma rays. Each type has a corresponding range of energy,
frequency, and wavelength, as shown in Figure 1-3

The waves differ from one another in terms of energy, frequency, and
wavelength. However, they are similar because they all move at the speed of
light and they all consist of moving electric and magnetic fields.

The speed of an electromagnetic wave is related to its frequency and

wavelength by the equation
c=λf
where c is equal to 3x108 m/s, the speed of light in a
vacuum. This equation is called the wave equation.
Main properties of waves
There are three main properties of a wave: its velocity, wavelength, and
frequency.
Wave velocity (v) is how fast a wave propagates in a given medium. Its
unit is meter per second.
Wavelength (λ) is the distance over which the shape of a wave repeats. It
depends on the medium in which a wave travels. It is measured in meters.
Frequency (f) of a wave refers to how many times (per a given time
duration) the particles of a medium vibrate when the wave passes through
it. The unit of frequency is Hertz or 1/second.

λ = v/f
Wavelength formula
Using the wave equation, what is the wavelength of an
electromagnetic wave that travels in a vacuum and has a frequency
of 4x1014 Hz? Write your solution on the space provided.

λ = v/f
= 3x108 m/s
4x1014 Hz

λ = 7.5X10-07m
Directions: In a sheet of paper answer the following questions:

1. It is a scheme where electromagnetic waves are classified by frequency.
2. It is a disruptions caused by accelerating charged particles such as vibrating electrons, which
induce changes in the electric and magnetic fields.

Write T is the statement is true, if false underline the word/s that makes the statement
incorrect and write the correct word/s before the number.

3. As with other waves, the wavelength of an electromagnetic wave depends on its frequency
and speed.
4. The speed at which a wave propagates in a given medium is measured as wave velocity (v).
The meter per second is the unit of measurement.

Problem Solving.
