Theme of Death in Hamlet

ABOUT THE THEME :
ONE OF SHAKESPEARE'S THEMES IN
HAMLET IS DEATH SHAKESPEARE IS
SAYING THAT THE INTENTIONAL DEATH
OF ONE PERSON CAN LEAD TO THE
DEATH OF MANY OTHER PEOPLE , THIS
CAN BE MOTIVATED BY REVENGE
OR/AND MADNESS.
• In hamlet death is a theme that Shakespeare explores in depth throughout the play
, from the opening scene , when hamlet visited by his father ghost , the scene sets
the tone of the entire play where death , murder , revenge , suicide , are played
over and over , hamlet only must not work through how to revenge for his father's
death , but also must deal with his own feelings and fears about death .

• Yorick's skull in the hamlet skull scene is a symbol of death , the ultimate
destination of life , hamlet holding the skull represents the duality of life and
death , hamlet symbolizing life , the skull for death , its just a hands distance
between them !
Hamlet : " Follow him , Friends we’ll hear a play tomorrow-dost thou hear me , old
friend ? Can you play the murder of Gonzago ? "
( Hamlet Act II. II ).

This is when Hamlet sees the traveling actors and requests a specific play ; Hamlet
begins planning to his revenge now , this shows that death is a prominent theme in
Hamlet because the play includes the death of the king , this shows that Hamlet is
still upset about his father's death and wounds to seek revenge.
• Hamlet : " for murder , though it have no tongue will speak with most miraculous organ"
• ( Hamlet Act ii , scene ii ).

• This quote is saying that murder does not physically have a tongue , but it will find a way to speak
and be present , this proves that death is almost inevitable in hamlet .
• Polonius : " oh , iam slain "
• Hamlet : " A bloody dead ? Almost as bad , good mother , As kill a king and marry with his brother "
• ) Hamlet , Act iii , scene iv ).
• Polonius dies since hamlet accidentally killed him , hamlet compares his bad deed to his mother
marrying her husband's brother and the death of the king , because of this death , this starts the death
of other character , this event effects other characters and causes them to go mad or seek revenge on
the killer this is what motivate Laertes to kill hamlet .
Gertrude: " But long it could not be till that her garment , heavy with their drink , pulled the poor
wretch from her melodious lay to muddy death "

Gertrude is saying that Ophelia died , because her clothes pulled her down in the water , Ophelia
died because she went mad and fell into the river her madness was driven by the death of her father
. ) Hamlet , Act iv , scene vii ).
Hamlet : " oh, I die Horatio the potent poison quite o ‘ er crows my spirit “ ( Hamlet, Act v , scene
ii) .
Hamlet is dying since he was cut by the poisoned tip of the sword , this shows that he died ,
because Laertes wanted to get revenge on him , since everyone wanted to seek revenge on each
other , they all ended up dying .
