LESSON 5 - Parts and Function (Power Supply Unit)

The power supply converts AC power from a wall outlet to DC power needed to run the computer. It supplies different voltages like 3.3V, 5V, and 12V that are used in different computer components. Power supplies come in AT, ATX, and ATX 2.0 types and have connectors like 24-pin for motherboards, 4-pin Molex for hard drives, and SATA for SATA drives. The power supply filters and regulates the voltages to safely power the computer.

Power Supply

Sometimes abbreviated as PSU, which is short

for Power Supply Unit. The power supply unit
converts AC power from your wall outlet to DC power,
and supplies power throughout the computer.
3 types of power supply

AT (Advance Technology ) Power Supply - used in

very old PCs.
ATX (Advance Technology Extended) Power
Supply - still used in some PCs.
ATX-2 Power Supply - commonly in use today.
How a power supply works?

• The power supply converts AC from your

homes outlet into DC which your
computer needs to run.
• It adjust the supplied voltage to the levels
needed.
• It filters the voltages.
• Prevents any damaging power from
reaching or take effect at the output.
How the computer uses the voltages?

In the power supply the computer

uses the 3.3 voltage and 5 volt to run
the digital circuits.
The 12 volt is used to run motors like
in the disk drive and the fan to keep
the computer from over heating.
AT Power Supply
 There are 2- 6 pin connectors that supply
power to the motherboard.
 There are 4 voltages that AT supplies +5,
-5 +12, -12.

ATX Power Supply
 ATX has a
20-pin
connector for
mainboard
power
 +12, -12, +5,
-5, 3.3V
output
 The on/off
switch of ATX
units is
controlled
through the
motherboard
ATX 2.0 Power Supply

20 pin
connectors like
the ATX power
supply
ATX 2.0 has a 24
pin connector
4 Pin Molex Connector

This is used to power various components, including

hard drives and optical drives.

Berg Connector/Floppy Drive Connector

Berg connector is a power connection developed by

Berg Electronics. This is used to power floppy disk
drives in computers.
6 Pin Auxiliary Power Connector

Is a six wire power supply connector that connects to

the motherboard. This connector provides additional power to
the computer processor and other power hungry devices like a
video. This connector is rarely used anymore.

4 pin ATX +12 volt power cable/ P4 connector

This connector is usually used to power the Central Processing

Unit (CPU).

You can plug a 4 pin 12 volt power cable into an 8 pin EPS
motherboard connector but there's no guarantee that it will
work.
8 pin EPS +12 volt power cable

This cable was originally created for workstations to provide 12

volts to power multiple CPUs
SATA Power Cable

This is used to supply power to SATA Drives.

ATX 20 pin main power cable

A 20 pin power connector used to connect to the motherboard.

ATX 20+4 pin main power cable

Has a 20+4 cable which is compatible with both 20 and 24 pin

motherboards.
ATX 24 pin main power cable

The 24 pin main power connector was added in ATX12V 2.0 to

provide extra power needed by PCI Express slots.
