QUANTIFICATION and Numerical Application

The document discusses averages and provides examples of calculating averages. It also discusses the movement of clock hands and provides important facts about how the minute and hour hands relate over time. Specifically: 1) It defines an average as a single number that represents a list of numbers. Examples are provided of how to calculate averages of different data sets. 2) Details are given about the movement of clock hands in minutes. The minute hand moves 6 minutes per hour while the hour hand moves 5 minutes per hour, giving the minute hand a relative gain of 55 minutes every hour. 3) Over a 12 hour period, the hands will coincide 11 times and be opposite each other 11 times, for a total of 22 times their

Average

Introduction
● Definition and meaning
•  Average is a single number taken as a representative of a list of
numbers.
• Average=
• The average of n numbers from a to b =, provided common difference
between every two consecutive numbers is same.
• Examples:-
Tips for solving the problems
•  If the averages of , , , ,

If a man covers a certain distance at the speed and an equal distance

at the speed , then the average speed during the whole journey =.
Average speed of two speeds =
(Distance=SpeedTime)
Solved Examples
Clock
•  In 1 minute , the minute hand covers =
• In 1 minute , the minute hand covers =
Important facts
i)In a period of 60 minutes , the minute hand moves 60-minute spaces
Whereas hour hand moves 5 minutes spaces and therefore the minute hand
attains a gain of 55-minute spaces over the hour hand
Thus, for every actual gain of 60 minutes of minute hand, the relative gain is 55
minute.
ii) In every hour both the hands are in same straight line twice. At one time
they are coincident and at the other time they are linearly opposite to each
other.
In a period of 12 hours ,both the hands are in the same straight line 22 times. In
fact, both the hands coincide 11 times and are opposite to each other 11 times.
Explanation
Explanation
• Note that each time they meet, the number of minutes past the hour keeps increasing,
so the hour hand would have moved closer to the next number. After 11 o'clock, the
minute hand has to travel all the way and by the time they meet it is having to be 12
o'clock again, since we know what the clock looks like at that time. So the two hands
overlap 11 times in a 12-hour period. So, in a 24-hour period, they would overlap 22
times.
• To answer the second part of the question, let's try to figure out the little bit of extra
time the minute hand needs to catch up to the hour hand after every 1:05 hours. Well,
after 12 o'clock there are eleven occasions when the two hands match up, and since the
clock hands move at constant speeds, those 11 events are spread equally apart around
the clock face, so they are 1/11th of an hour apart. That's 5.454545 minutes apart. In
other words they meet every after every 1 hour and 5.454545 minutes.
• The precise times they overlap (in hours) would be 1 + 1/11, 2 + 2/11, 3+ 3/11, all the
way up to 11 + 11/11, which is 12 o'clock again.
How many times are the hands of a clock
in straight line ?
• Explanation: The hands of a clock point in opposite directions
(in the same straight line) 11 times in every 12 hours.
• (Because between 5 and 7 they point in opposite directions at 6
o'clock only).
• So, in a day, the hands point in the opposite directions 22 times.
Important facts
•  iii) if the two hands are coincident, then they are 0-minute space apart.
• iv) if the two hands are in opposite directions i.e., they are in same
straight line but not together, then they are 30 minutes spaces apart.
• V) the two hands are at right angles if they are 15-minute spaces apart. In
one hour, they form two right angles and in 12 hours they are at right
angles 22 times.
• vi) Angle traced by hour hand in one hour=
• vii) ) Angle traced by minute hand in one minute =
• Viii) if relative gain is 55-minute spaces, then actual gain=60 minutes
if relative gain is 60-minute spaces, then actual gain=minutes
So, the minute hand and the hour hand are together i.e, they coincide after
Every minutes.
