 Crucial role in national economy especially in rural


sector for landless and women.
 Employment generation is 19 million in principal and
subsidiary status.
 Contribution to national GDP 7.35%
 Annual contribution of livestock, Animal Husbandry,
Fishery sector is Rs. 1,70,000 crores.
 Milch cattle alone contributes through milk and milk
products more than Rs. 90,000 crores annually.

Introduction to theINDIAN Dairy
Industry
DAIRY INDUSTY
First in the world in milk production with 108 million tons (2007)
•Comprises mainly of milk and milk products (cheese, cream, ice cream,
mayonnaise, butter, etc).
•Comprises for about 17% of total country’s expenditure on food.
•Extent of processing - 37%.
•Growth rate of Market – 15%

Structure
 State co-operatives & privately owned Indian companies dominate the liquid
milk sector

 India has around 70,000 village dairy co-operatives, 22 co-operative dairy


federations at state level & 170 milk producer unions at district level

 Infant Milk Food, Milk Powder, Whitener, Condensed Milk, Malted Milk
Food, Butter, Cheese, Ice Cream and Ghee are the major value added products
from the Indian dairy sector

 Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd. (Amul) and Nestle are
the leading players in the value-added segment

Introduction to the INDIAN Poultry Industry
Largest number of livestock population in the world
accounting for 50 % of buffaloes and 16 %of the goat
population.
Animals generally used for production of meat are cattle,
buffaloes, sheep, pigs and poultry.
Consumption per head of both fresh and processed meat
is very low at 1.5 kg compared with world average of
35.5 kg
Growth rate of market - 10%
Extent of processing – 1%
The poultry meat processing industry is still in its
nascent stage

Around 97 % of poultry meat in India is consumed in


the fresh form

Only 3 % or about 23,000 tonnes is processed at


present

Western Hatcheries (part of the Venkateswara Group)


were the first to set up a poultry processing unit in India
(1986)
