Concept
Paper is
At the end of the lesson, the learners are expected to:

2. elucidate on a concept by definition;
3. elucidate on a concept by explication;
4. elucidate on a concept by clarification;
5. identify situations by which concept paper may
improve the society; and
6. comprehends various kinds of concept paper.
How is Concept Paper Defined?
To fully comprehend concept paper as an academic
paper designed for something it is better to
understand this from its compounded words. Encarta
Dictionaries defined concept as, “something thought
or imagined, a broad principle affecting the
perception and behavior, the most basic
understanding of something, and way of doing or
perceiving something”. On the other side, refers to
paper as, “academic article or talk, a document or a
student essay”.
Likewise, the US Dictionary defined concept as an
abstract idea; a general notion that originated
during the Mid16th century to mean “though” or
“imagination”. I came from the Latin “conceptum”
meaning something conceived. They defined
paper as “an essay or thesis, especially one read
at an academic lecture or seminar or published in
an academic journal” which originated in Middle
English from Anglo-Norman French “papir” and
Latin “papyrus” meaning paper-reed during the
16th century.
From this, concept paper defines an idea or a
concept and explains its essence in order clarify
the “whatness” of that idea or concept. It
answers the questions such as what is it and what
about it that starts with a definition, either formal
or informal, of the term or the concept and
proceeds with an expanded definition and an
analytic description of the aspects of the concept.
It stipulates the meaning of a term through
limiting, extending, or redirecting in a facilitated
understanding.
The idea of a concept paper has evolved over the years
but has now come to mean, a document which
summarizes what a project is about, why it is
important, and how it is intended to be carried out. It
consists of the topic under research, the hypothesis
that you seek to approve or disprove, research
questions, data required, and methods of obtaining it.
It is sometimes known as a proposal or an abstract. The
latter two are usually more detailed than a concept
paper but often serve the same purpose, that is, to
convince the party evaluating it that the research
project is worthwhile.
Depending on the research being carried out, it is a
paper ranging from 2-3 pages for small research
project to 20 pages for massive research projects. All
researches and projects need a concept paper that
act as a short summary telling the reader what the
project is, why it is important, and how it will be
carried out. Even if no one else ever reads it, the
concept paper spot holes in projects that might later
prove fatal. It should enable a casual reader to
understand what the researcher investigates, why it
is important, and how the investigation proceeds.
A concept paper could also mean summaries of
projects or issues that reflect the interests, experience
and expertise of the writer or organization. Concept
papers generally serve the purpose of providing in-
depth discussion of a topic that the writer has a strong
position on, usually with the intent of obtaining funding
for that project from donors. In addition to providing
guidance for implementation of a program, a concept
paper could also discuss best practices, philosophies
and other related issues that the writer believes action
should be taken on in the near future.
A concept paper aims to capture thoughts and ideas
and enables putting thoughts and ideas into paper
for consideration for research. It is from the concept
paper that one develops the research proposal
which can either be business or academic oriented.
Most students, and especially the postgraduate
students who have a mandatory requirement of
undertaking research, usually goes direct to the
research proposal. This makes concept paper a
stepping stone for developing research writing
competency.
