Discuss the brief history of Arnis.
Give the importance of Arnis.
Perform the different basic skills of
Arnis.
What is Arnis?
Arnis is the national martial art sport of
Philippines. It is also known as Eskrima
and Kali. This sport actually emphasizes
weapon based fighting which is done using
knives, bladed weapons, sticks and various
improvised weapons. It also includes hand
to hand combat, grappling and weapon
disarming methods (Wikipedia).
ARNIS - Tagalog corruption of the Spanish term arnes,
or harness, a reference to the decorations worn by the
early Filipinos.
KALI - is another term used to refer the same
kind of martial arts.
Baston (Ilonggo)

Kalirongan (Pangasinan)
There are three suggestion of where does this
Arnis came from:

 1. Originally came from another martial art system called


TJAKALELE (it is actually the name of a branch of the
Indonesian martial art system known as
PENTJAKSILAT.
 2. It was brought here from the Southeast Asian
mainland, particularly during the MADJAPAHIT and
SHRI-VISAYAN EMPIRES.
 3. It was propagated by the Ten Bornean datus fleeing
persecution from their homeland.

 Pigafetta, (Magellan’s Chronicler and historian) he recorded on April

27, 1521 Lapu-Lapu felled the greatest Spanish warrior with a bladed
weapon thus marking a Filipino’s first victorious stand against a foreign
invader.

 many natives carried a pointed short hardwood stick which had been

further hardened by fire treatment and used in fighting.


Equipment used to fight in Arnis:
KNIVES, STICKS OR WEAPONS WITH BLADE
Arnis Filipino Martial Art can be performed
individually or with partner using a single sticks or a pair of
sticks for striking and blocking also be used as self-defense.

Arnis is a PHILIPPINES’ NATIONAL MARTIAL ART or


SPORT after former PRES. GLORIA MACAPAGAL
ARROYO signed the Republic Act. No. 9850 in 2009. This act
mandates the Department of Education to include the sport as a
Physical Education course Arnis will be included among the
priority sports in Palarong Pambansa (National Game)
beginning 2010.

What are the basic stances of arnis?
Ready Stance - This is the most common used stance when you are standing
at ease.
Attention Stance - This stance is different from the ready stance, since you
stand with your feet forming a 45 degrees angle.
