Political parties are groups of citizens organized to control government through their voting power and promote public interests on agreed upon principles. Essential functions of political parties include organizing branches nationwide, maintaining consistent views, working for national interests, gaining power through constitutional means, accepting election defeats, and having faith in voting. Political parties prepare election platforms, form public opinions, select candidates, link elected officials to voters, campaign, and bring people to polls. A multiple party system better represents diverse societies and is more democratic. Political parties in some countries have failed to strengthen institutions, decentralize power, or promote strong democratic political culture.
