1. Located near region of high stress concentration (e.g. shrunk-on discs,
shaft end fillet radii).
2. Generally (not always) associated with corrosion pits.

Retak yang terjadi pada steam turbine rotor and blades of a geothermal power
plant (2 x 8 stages tandem) pada area fillet antara disk dan shaft
The microstructure obtained from this test spot consists of :
Tempered lath martensite and/or bainite of low-alloy Cr-Mo-Ni-V steel forging with no
any significant phase changes observed such as formation of carbide precipitation or
other. Besides that the microstructure condition is also supported by the hardness test
performed randomly in the area which showing hardness value in the range of 290 -
320 HB. The transverse periphery cracks that formed in this area (at fillet radii
between shaft end and wheel disk) is considered as main crack which propagated in
transgranular manner. Formation of this crack may be associated with corrosion pits
that have formed on the surface of wheel disk/shaft radii around the crack path.
