Does the Century Learners
already equipped these skills?
Why or Why not?
What is Problem-Based Learning
Approach?
Problem-Based Learning (PBL)

It is an educational method that provides

students with authentic learning opportunities
with a focus on teaching through real-life
situations and solving real world problems.
Problem-Based Learning (PBL)

In addition, PBL is highly student-centered

and involves students developing their own
knowledge and discovering important
information through teacher guidance, not
teacher lecture.
Problem-Based Learning (PBL)

Through PBL, students are no longer passive

“consumers of knowledge,” but are becoming
active “creators of knowledge.”
history of pbl

The PBL process was pioneered by Barrows and Tamblyn at the medical
school program at McMaster University in Hamilton in the 1960s. The
PBL curriculum was developed in order to stimulate learning by allowing
students to see the relevance and application to future roles. It maintains a
higher level of motivation towards learning, and shows the importance of
responsible, professional attitudes with teamwork values. The motivation
for learning drives interest because it allows for selection of problems that
have real-world application.
CHARACTERISTICS OF PBL

• the role of the tutor as a facilitator of learning.

• the responsibilities of the learners to be self-directed and
self-regulated in their learning
• the essential elements in the design of ill-
structured instructional problems as the driving force for
inquiry.
PBL helps to prepare all students for the
rapidly changing world regardless of their
cognitive abilities. PBL not only develops
21st century skills, but also improves student
motivation, which is another important aspect
to success in the modern world.
PBL improves student motivation in two
ways:

1. introducing meaningful activities

2. developing positive student perceptions of
the PBL strategy
BENEFITS OF PBL

• Engagement: Students are more likely to

be engaged in their schooling when they
feel autonomy over their own learning.
Project based learning allows students to
be drivers of their own learning.
BENEFITS OF PBL

• Teach and assess multiple skills: Teachers

have multiple assessment opportunities to
test different skills.

BENEFITS OF PBL

 Differentiation: Students with various

learning styles and differences are
accommodated since PBL showcases a broad
range of capabilities.
BENEFITS OF PBL

 Accountability: Students take greater

responsibility for their own learning.
DISADVANTAGES OF PBL
•  TIME CONSUMING
• TRADITIONAL ASSUMPTIONS OF THE
STUDENTS
• ROLE OF THE INSTRUCTOR
• PUPIL’S EVALUATION
• COGNITIVE LOAD
ADVANTAGES OF PBL
• Fosters student-centred learning
• Upholds lifelong learning
• Prominence on comprehension not facts
• In-depth learning and constructivist approach
• Augments self-learning
•  Better understanding and adeptness
• Reinforces interpersonal skills and teamwork
• Self-motivated attitude
• Enriches the teacher-student relationship
• Higher level of learning
