Week 3 - Select Components To Be Measured

This document discusses different types of computer memory and storage. It describes two main types of computer memory: read-only memory (ROM) which permanently stores basic input/output instructions and cannot be changed, and random access memory (RAM) which temporarily stores data and programs and is erased when the computer is powered off. It also discusses different types of storage drives including floppy disks, hard disk drives, and optical drives like CDs, DVDs, and Blu-ray discs. The document provides examples of how these memory and storage components work and what types of data they can hold. It encourages learning more about data storage through a video link and performance tasks comparing computer components to real-world storage spaces.

Have you noticed the
different sizes of closets,
cupboards, drawers and
storage boxes in your home?
Why do you think
these things come in
different sizes?
What is
Computer
Memory?
Memory refers to
the process are
used to acquire,
store, retain, and
later retrieve
information
Two Types of Memory
• Read Only Memory
(ROM)
• Random Access
Memory (RAM)
Read Only Memory
Chips are located in the motherboard.

ROM chips can retain their contents even when the computer is
powered down. The content cannot be erased.

Rom is Non-Volatile means that the data is permanent.

Random Access Memory

Is a temporary storage for data and programs.

RAM is Volatile Means the content are erased when the computer is
powered off.

and Logic Unit.
Types of Storage
Drives
Floppy Drive

- Is a storage device that uses

removable 3–5-inch disk.

- These Magnetic floppy disk can

store 720 KB or 1.44 MB of data in a
computer
Hard Disk Drive
A magnetic storage device that stored
inside the computer.
- It is used as permanent storage
for data.
- It contains the operating System
and applications
Optical Drive

- It is uses lasers to read data on the optical

media.
- 3 types of optical Media
CD
DVD
BD
Example: CD-ROM (compact dics-read-only
Optical Media memory), CD-R (compact dics-recordable),
CD-RW (compact dics-rewritable),
Flash Drive
- Also known as Thumb
Dive

- It is a removable storage
device that connects to a USB

Why is it necessary to
store data?
Things to do:
1. How Much Have You Learned?
- Direction. Match items on Column A with Column
B. Write your answers on a separate sheet of paper.

2. Performance Task
- Ask the students to layout closet cabinet and
computer/laptop/cellphone/gadgets. Then they will cite the
similarities and differences of the two.
