WHY DO WE NEED STATISTICS IN RESEARCH?

WHY DO WE NEED STATISTICS IN RESEARCH?

Statistics is the science that deals with the
collection, tabulation or presentation, analysis,
and interpretation of numerical or quantitative
data.
Research is a purposive, systematic and
scientific process of gathering, analyzing,
classifying, organizing, presenting and
interpreting data for the solution of a problem,
for prediction, for invention, for the discovery
of the truth, all for the preservation and
improvement of the quality of life
Inferential Statistics is the tool I to use to reject
the null hypothesis in order to accept (confirm)
the alternative hypothesis.
WHY DO WE NEED STATISTICS IN RESEARCH?
ROLE OF STATISTICS IN RESEARCH
VALIDITY
Will this study help answer the research question?

ANALYSIS
What analysis, and how should this be interpreted and reported?

EFFICIENCY
Was the sample size used for the experiment the correct size?

HOW DO WE DETERMINE THE APPROPRIATE T
EST STATISTICS FOR OUR RESEARCH PROBLE
M? THE FOLLOWING
CONSIDER
CLASSIFICATION
OF DATA

• the type of outcome variable being analyzed (continuous, dichotomous, discrete)

• the number of comparison groups in the investigation
RESEARCH
• whether the comparison groups are independent (i.e., physically separate DESIGN
such as men versus women) or dependent (i.e., matched or paired such as
pre- and post-assessments on the same participants).
• the hypothesis being tested RESEARCH
