Sem 7 MMBC Module 1 - Woods

Wood is a natural building material that comes from trees and plants. It exists in both softwood and hardwood varieties. There are also several engineered wood products like plywood, particle board, medium density fibreboard (MDF), and high density fibreboard (HDF) that are manufactured from wood or wood byproducts. These engineered woods have different advantages over natural wood like reduced warping, increased strength and density, and lower cost. Plywood, MDF, HDF and other engineered woods are widely used in construction and manufacturing of furniture.

WOOD-as a building material

• Wood is a porous and fibrous structural tissue found in the stems and roots of trees and other
woody plants.
• Classification :
wood

natural engineered

Soft wood Hard wood

Plywood
Fiberboard
Pine Teak Particle board
Cedar Rose Laminates
Fir Maple Veneer
Spruce Oak Densified
Hemlock Mahogany wood(MDF,HDF)
Birch Walnut Hardboard
Deodar

Wood identification based on color

PLYWOOD
• Plywood is a material manufactured from thin layers or "plies" of wood veneer that are glued
together with adjacent layers having their wood grain rotated up to 90 degrees to one another.
Types :
• commercial plywood – They are light in colour and are usually used in interior. Ex- hollock ,
silver oak.
• waterproof plywood – It is used in area where there is moisture. It is chemically treated to
make it moisture and termite resistant. It is black in colour due to the chemical used.
• Flexo plywood - It is a flexible plywood which is used to make curved forms. In this the grains
are all in one direction and not adjacent which helps it to bend easily.
• marine plywood – These kind of plywood are waterproof and are used for construction of
deck or house boat.
• softwood plywood – these plywood are made out of softwood ex. Pine , cedar etc. the most
common dimension for this is 1.2m*2.4m with thickness from 1.4mm-4.3mm
• hardwood plywood – these plywood are made from hardwood ex: teak, maple etc. they are
used for heavy duty structures as they are strong and resistant to wear and tear.
• aircraft plywood – It is made out of birch and mahogany in which the individual veneers are
glued together. It was used in WW2 aircrafts, hence the name.
• decorative plywood – they are usually faced with hardwood. It is easier to dye and draw on
these plywood.
Plywood sizes and price :

Advantages :
• Resistant to warping, cracking and twisting making it ideal for construction.
• Plywood is less expensive than similar boards made of full wood.
Disadvantages :
• The layering effect in plywood makes it porous hence susceptible to water damage if exposed
over time.
BLOCKBOARD
• Blockboard are a kind of plywood in which the veneers are glued on both sides of wooden
battens.
• Blockboards are seasoned boards and have all the properties of wood like ease to work, paint
etc.
• These have advantages over raw wooden planks for the reason that these boards are more
strong.
• Blockboards have better ability to hold nails and screws compared to other engineered boards
such particle boards or MDF.
• It is light weight because the core blocks that form the bulk of the board are of softwood that
has much lesser density and weight compared to hardwood hence easy transportation.
• It is used for making furniture, partitions etc.
Blockboard sizes and price :
PARTICLE BOARD
• Particle board aka chop board is an engineered wood manufactured from wood chips,
sawmill shavings or even sawdust and a synthetic resin or other suitable binder, which is
pressed and extruded.
• These are cheaper and denser than conventional wood and plywood and is substituted for
them when appearance and strength are less importance than cost.
Advantages :
• It is cheaper than solid timber.
• It doesn’t warp, split or change in humidity like solid timber.
• Particle board can be made attractive by using veneers on it.
Disadvantages :
• It is rarely used outdoors or places that have high level of moisture.
• Cutting is not possible in particle board.
• Designs can’t be made on particle board.
Particle board size and price :
MDF (MEDIUM DENSITY FIBREBOARD)
• MDF is made out of sawdust of hardwood and softwood that is compressed with high pressure
of 400 degrees and bounded together in the form of sheets.
• MDF is generally denser than plywood.
There are 2 grades for MDF :
• Exterior grade – it has water resistant properties hence can be used in exterior.
• Interior grade – it is suitable only for interior.
• It is used for decorative wall cladding, in wooden handicraft items, kitchen and wardrobe
shutters etc.
Advantages :
• It is cheap, dense, flat, stiff and has no knots.
• MDF has no grain so it can be cut, drilled, machined and filled without damaging the surface.
• It is eco friendly since its made out of recycled materials.
Disadvantages :
• MDF contains formaldehyde which may be released while cutting and can cause irritation to
eyes if not handled properly.
• It has a lot of glue which can damage or blunt the tools while cutting or nailing.
MDF sizes and price :

HDF (HIGH DENSITY FIBREBOARD)

• In the manufacturing process of HDF sawdust is crushed at a micro level and then
compressed to make sheets.
• It is stronger then MDF .
• It is used for furniture making, partition, seat backs in railways etc.
HDF sizes and price :
LAMINATES
• Laminates are sheet having thickness of around 1mm which is used to overlay on wooden
furniture which gives more attractive look.
• These laminates are water resistant, abrasion resistant and scratch resistant.
• The various finishes available in laminates are matt, glossy, metallic, textured and digital.
Laminates size and price :

WOOD WOOL
• It is a product made of wood slivers cut from logs.
• It is mainly used in packaging, for cooling pads in home evaporative cooling systems known
as swamp coolers, for erosion control mats, and as a raw material for the production of other
products such as bonded wood wool boards.
• It is also used as sound absorbers.
