What is Gender and
Development

The Magna Carta of Women (Republic Act No.

9710) defines Gender and Development
Program (GAD) as the development perspective
and process that is participatory and
empowering, equitable, sustainable, free from
violence, respectful of human rights, supportive
of self-determination and actualization of
human potentials.
How Gender &
Development
Started ?
Gender and
Development was
developed in the
1980’s as an

Goals of
Gender and
Development
The purpose of GAD is to ensure
that both men and women can
participate in, and benefit from,
development in a way that is
equitable. In view of widespread
disparities it is a process
comprising both short-term and
long-term objectives - "practical
and strategic needs"
As a development approach, GAD seeks
to equalize the status and condition of and
relations between women and men by
influencing the process and output
of policy-
making, planning, budgeting, implementatio
n and monitoring, and evaluation so that
they would deliberately address the gender
issues and concerns affecting the full
development of women.

GAD IN TOURISM &
HOSPITALITY
MANAGEMENT/
INDUSTRY
In many places across the globe, women
actually make up the majority of workers
in the tourism industry. International
reports performed by bodies such as the
UNWTO report that women comprise 54%
of workers within the tourism industry
instead of only 39% across the broader
economy. This means that fighting for
female rights within this industry has the
potential to change many women’s lives.
However, the unfortunate truth is that
while women may make up a significant
chunk of the tourism workforce, they are
typically concentrated in the jobs with the
lowest pay and the lowest status.
