DISASTER
– A DISASTER IS A SERIOUS DISRUPTION OF THE
FUNCTIONING OF A COMMUNITY OR A SOCIETY
INVOLVING WIDESPREAD HUMAN, MATERIAL, ECONOMIC
OR ENVIRONMENTAL LOSSES AND IMPACTS, WHICH
EXCEEDS THE ABILITY OF THE AFFECTED COMMUNITY OR
SOCIETY TO COPE USING ITS OWN RESOURCES.
DISASTER MANAGEMENT

–A DISASTER IS THAT SUDDEN CALAMITY WHICH BRINGS MISFORTUNE AND

MISERIES TO HUMANITY. DISASTERS HAVE SERIOUS IMPACT ON HUMAN
LIFE, ECONOMY AND ENVIROMENT. THEY DISRUPT THE NORMAL PATTERN
OF LIFE BECAUSE A DISASTER IS OFTEN SEVER, SUDDEN, UNEXPECTED AND
WIDESPREAD.
–NATURAL DISASTER ARE ALWAYS SEVERE AND SUDDEN. SOME DISASTERS
ARE GEOLOGICAL IN NATURE LIKE EARTHQUAKES, LANDSLIDES, VOLCANIC,
ERUPTIONS, ETC.SOME ARE CLIMATIC DISASTERS LIKE FLOODS, DROUGHTS
AS WELL, LIKE WARS OR BATTLES, RIOTS, TERRORIST STRIKES, RAIL OR ROAD
ACCIDENTS , ETC.
– FLOODS, EARTHQUAKES, CYCLONES, LANDSLIDES, AND TE
LIKE ARE NORMAL EARTH PROCESSES, EVENT THAT HAVE
MADE OUR EARTH WHAT IT IS TODAY. HOWERVER, WHEN
THEY OCCUR IN PROXIMITY TO HUMAN SETTLEMENTS,
THEIR CONSQUENCES CAN BE AMONG THE WROST AND
MOST FEARED DISASTERS THAT BE FALL US.
CYCLONE
– A CYCLONE IS AN AREA OF LOW PRESSURE IN THE CENTRE AND
HIGH PRESSURE OUTSIDE. IT IS A POWERFUL SWIRLING STROM
THAT MEASURES FROM 300 TO 500 KM IN DIAMETER. THE WIND
IN THE CENTRE OF A CYCLONE BLOWS AT A SPEED OF 120 KM
PER HOUR.
– THE CYCLONES, THUS, CAN BE DEFINED AS TRAVELLING LOW
PRESSURE AREA, ROUGHLY CIRCULAR OR OVAL IN SHAPE,
WHICH ORIGINATE AS A WAVE ALONG THE FRONT SEPARATING
TWO AIR MASSES OF DIFFERENT TEMPERATURE, DENSITY AND
DIRECTION.
CYCLONE NAME IN VARIOUS
REGIONS
– A TROPICAL CYCLONE IS THE GENERAL TERM FOR
VIOLENT CIRCULAR WINDS WITH TORRENTAIL RAINS THAT
ORIGINATE IN THE TROPICS.
– HURRICANS IS THE TERM WHEN THEY OCCUR IN THE
ATLANTIC OCEAN.
– THEY ARE CALLED TYPHOONS IN THE PACIFIC OCEAN.
– THEY ARE CALLED CYCLONES IN THE INDIAN OCEAN.
STRUCTURE AND FORMATION:

– THE STRUCTURE OF CYCLONE

CONSISTS OF NORTHERN
HEMISPHERE, CENTRE AND
SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE.
USUALLY A CYCLONE HITS WHERE
THERE IS LOW ATMOSPHERIC
PRESSURE AND THE LOW
ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE ARE
MOSTLY FOUND IN TROPICAL AND
SUB-TROPICAL REGIONS.
FORMATION OF CYCLONE:

– COLD-CORE CYCLONE:
THESE CYCLONS FORM DUE TO THE
MOTION OF A CYCLONE. THE PRESSURE HERE INCREASES
UPWARDS AND LOW SURFACE PRESSURE.
– WARM-CORE CYCLONES:
IT STARTS DUE TO THE UPPER
PRESSURE AND AS THE CYCLONE FORMS IT INCREASES ITS
STRENGTH.
CATEGORIZATION:

– POLAR CYCLONES
– POLAR LOW
– SUBTROPICAL CYCLONES
– TROPICAL CYCLONES
– EXTRATERRESTRIAL CYCLONES
POLAR CYCLONES:

– POLAR CYCLONE IS A LOW

PRESSUR WEATHER SYSTEM
USUALLY SPAN UP TO 1,000 TO
2,000KMS IN WHICH THE AREA
CIRCULATES IN A COUNTER
CLOCKWISE DIRECTION IN
NORTHERN HEMISPHERE AND
CLOCKWISE SOUTHERN
HEMISPHERE.
POLAR LOW:

– THIS IS FOUND OVER OCEAN

AREAS. IT HAS A HORIZONTAL
LENGTH SCALLING LESS THAN
1,000KMS AND EXISTS NO
MORE THAN A COUPLE OF
DAYS. THEY ARE DIFFICULT TO
DETECT USING CONVENTIONAL
WEATHER REPORTS, WHICH IS
HAZARDOUS FOR SHIPPING,
GAS AND OIL PLAT FORMS.
SUB-TROPICAL:

– THESE CYCLONES
HAVE THE
CHARACTERISTICS OF
TROPICAL CYCLONES.
IT CAN BE FORMED
IN A WIDE BAND OF
LATITUDE FROM THE
EQUATOR TO 50
DEGREES.
TROPICAL CYCLONES:

– A TROPICAL
CYCLONE IS THE
STROM SYSTEM
FUELED BY THE
HEAT RELEASED
WHEN MOIST AIR
RISES AND THE
WATER VAPOUR IN
IT CONDENSES.
EXTRATERRESTRIAL CYCLONE:

– THIS CYCLONE IS FOUND

ON MARS BY THE HUBBLE
SPACE TELESCOPE. THESE
ARE NOT UNIQUE TO
EARTH. THESE CYCLONES
ARE COMMON ON
JOVIAN PLANETS LIKE THE
SMALL DARK SPOT ON
NEPTUNE, MARS.
PREVENTION TO BE TAKEN
BEFORE A CYCLONE:
– KEEP A LIST OF EMERGENCY PHONE NUMBER HANDY, INCLUDING
NUMBER FOR YOUR LOCAL POLICE, FIRE, AMBULANCE, STATE
EMRGENCY SERVICE, ETC..
– CLEAR YOUR PROPERTY OF ANY LOOSE ITEM THAT COULD BECOME
MISSILES DURING EXTREME WINDS
– STORE YOUR IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS IN A FIRE/WATER-PROOF
CONTAINER OR SAFE DEPOSIT BOX.
– CHECK THAT YOU HAVE ADEQUATE HOUSEHOLD AND CONTENTS
INSURANCE AND WHICH HAZARD ARE NOT COVERED BY THE
POLICY.
PREVENTION AT THE TIME
WHEN CYCLONE HITS:
– DISCONNECT ALL ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES AND TURN OFF THE GAS.
– FUEL YOUR CAR AND PARK IT UNDER SOLID COVER
– PACK AN EVACUATION KIT INCLUDING YOUR EMERGENCY KI, WARM
CLOTHING, ESSENTIAL MEDICATIONS, VALUABLES, PAPERS, PHOTO
AND KEEPSAKES IN WATERPROOF BAGS.
– STAY INSIDE AND SHELTER IN THE STRINGEST PART OF THE
BUILDING.
– CONTINUE TO LISTEN TO YOUR PORTABLE RADIO FOR UPDATES AND
ADVICE.
– BEWARE OF THE CALM ‘EYE’ OF THE CYCONE. IF THE WIND
SUDDENLY DROPS, DON’T ASSUME THAT THE CYCLONE IS OVER.
VIOLENT WINDS WLL SOON RESUME FROM THE OPPOSITE
DIRECTION.
– IF YOU ARE DRIVING, STOP – BUT WELL AWAY FROM THE SEA AND
CLEAR OF TREES, POWER-LINES AND WATERCOURSES. STAY IN YOUR
VEHICLE.
PREVENTIONS TO BE TAKEN
AFTER CYCLONE:
– DON’T GO OUTSIDE UNTIL OFFICALLY ADVISED IT IS SAFE TO DO
SO.
– CHECK FOR GAS LEAKS AND DON’T USE ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES IF
WET.
– KEEP LISTENING TO YOUR LOCAL RADIO FOR OFFICAL WARNINGS
AND ADVICE.
– IF YOU DID EVACUATE YOUR HOME, DON’T RETURN UNTIL
ADVISED.
– BEWARE OF FALLEN POWERLINES, DAMAGED BRIDGES, BUILDING
AND TREES, AND DON’T ENTER FLOODWATERS.
CASE STUDY - CYCLONE TRACY

–CYCLONE TRACY IS KNOWN AS ONE OF

AUSTRALIA’S WORST CYCLONE BECAUSE IT
OCCURRED ON CHRISTMAS DAY.
–CYCLONE TRACY WAS FIRST DETECTED ON
THE 20TH DECEMBER 1974 IN THE ARAFURA
SEA 370KM NORTH EAST OF DARWIN. IT
WAS FIRST ANNOUNCED AS A TROPICAL
CYCLONE ON THE 21ST DECEMBER, BEFORE
THEN IT WAS CONSIDERED A TROPICAL LOW.
ALTHOUGH A WARNING WAS ISSUED NO
ONE PAID ATTENTION TO IT BECAUSE THEY
HAD HAD MANY FALSE ALARMS BEFORE.
– AS THE CYCLONE OCCURRED ON CHRISTMAS DAY THE RESIDENT WERE NOT PREPARED. A TOTAL OF
35,000 PEOPLE WERE EVACUATED AND ONLY 10,000 STAYED.

– EVEN THOUGH MOST OF THE HOUSES WERE REBUILT BEFORE TRACY NOT MANY OF THEM COULD
WITHSTAND CYCLONE TRACY. CYCLONE TRACY WAS DECLARED A CATEGORY 4 STORM BUT THE
DAMAGE CAUSED SUGGESTS THAT IT REACHED CATEGORY 5.
– THE TOTAL DAMAGES CAUSED BY THE CYCLONE WAS $837 MILLION (AUD 1974)
AND 71 LIVES WERE LOST, 64 ON LAND AND 7 OUT AT SEA. MORE THAN 30,000
PEOPLE WERE LEFT WITHOUT A HOME. ALL POWER LINES, COMMUNICATIONS,
WATER AND SEWAGE WERE ALSO DESTROYED. 90% OF ALL BUILDINGS WERE
DESTROYED AND HAD TO BE REBUILT.
