Noun Phrase
 A phrase that acts like a noun in a sentence.
 It contains a noun and other associated words which modify
a noun.

Example:

A woman in the window shouted for help.


Noun Phrase
woman – Noun In the window – Modifies Noun
Verb Phrase
 A verb phrase is a group of main verb and helping verb
within a sentence

Example:

She has finished her work.


Verb Phrase

Finished – Main Verb Has- Helping verb


Adverb Phrase
 In adverb phrase one or more words work together to give
more information about adverb

Example:

They ran really fast.


Adverb Phrase

Fast – Adverb. Really- Provides more info about


the adverb.
Adjective Phrase
 One or more words that work together to give more information about the
noun

 In short it modifies a noun just like any single-word adjectives

Example:

I am very happy with his work.


Adjective Phrase

Happy – Adjective. Very– is just a modifier for the adjective.


Prepositional Phrase
 Words that work together to give more info about another word or group of
words. These phrases are introduced by a preposition.

 It gives you information about time. Location, possession, or condition

Example:

He is sleeping on the carpet


Prepositional Phrase

On – Preposition. the Carpet – Object of the preposition


Clause
What is a Clause ?
Clause is a group of words with at least a subject
and a verb.

Clauses can be independent or dependent.

SENTENCE
What is a Sentence ?
A Sentence is usually defined as a group of words
that expresses a complete thought.

Sentence contains a subject and a predicate.


Kinds of Sentence According to Purpose

01 Declarative Sentence

02 Interrogative Sentence

01 Declarative Sentence

 Makes a statement. It always ends with a period


Example:

1. God created the heaven and earth.

2. He gave him and his wife a beautiful home.


02 Interrogative Sentence

 Asks question. It always ends with a question mark


Example:

1. Who is the national hero of the Philippines?

2. What is the capital city of the Philippines?


03 Imperative Sentence

 Gives command or makes request. It may be followed


either by a period or exclamation point

Example:

1. Please teach us how to pray.

2. Bow down for the king is here!


04 Exclamatory Sentence

 Expresses strong feeling. It usually followed by an


exclamation point

Example:

1. What an extraordinary prospect for mankind!

2. How grateful we can be for his undeserved


kindness!
