Lesson-2 Deductive Reasoning

This document discusses deductive reasoning and its use in solving problems. It defines deductive reasoning as making specific and truthful conclusions based on generalized principles. Examples are provided of deductive reasoning, including determining if a professor has a master's degree based on their faculty status, and determining if a number is even or divisible by 2 based on rules for even numbers. The document also shows worked examples of using deductive reasoning to solve word problems, such as finding consecutive even numbers based on their sum, and determining the amounts of different coins a person has based on information about their total amount and coin ratios.

Introduction
Mathematical reasoning can sometimes lead
observers to make impractical decisions. If the event
happened already, what evidences can be made to
justify the event?
Information that have already been verified are
important to prove the validity of reasoning. This is the
reason conjectures can be transformed into generalized
principles

Lesson 2: Deductive Reasoning
Examples of Deductive Reasoning
Consider the following:
1. All College of Arts and Sciences faculty members have a Master’s degree.
Mr. Lozada is a College of Arts and Science professor. Therefore, he has
a Master’s degree.
2. All even numbers are divisible by 2. the number 506 is even. Therefore,
it is divisible by 2.
3. Reflex angles are angles that are more than 180 degrees. The angle is
235 degrees. Therefore, it is a reflex angle.
