Bme Lab: Belt Drive Vs Chain Drive Vs Gear Drive

This document compares belt drives, chain drives, and gear drives. It discusses the main components of each - belts and pulleys, chains and sprockets, and gears. It outlines the different types of each drive and lists their main advantages and disadvantages. Key points are that belt drives are simplest and cheaper but have more slippage, while chain and gear drives provide more positive power transmission but are more complex and expensive. Gear drives in particular can achieve high velocity ratios and transfer power over short distances.

BELT DRIVE VS CHAIN DRIVE VS GEAR DRIVE

Belt drive

 A belt is a loop of flexible material used to link two or

more rotating shafts mechanically.

 The belt is a flexible element of a mechanical system.

 It is used to transfer the power from one System to
another System.
 The belt drive is also known as for continuous power
transmission.
There are five different kinds of belt
drive can be found and those are:

 Open belt drive

 Closed or crossed belt drive
 Fast and loose cone pulley
 Stepped cone pulley
 Jockey pulley drive
Advantages and Disadvantages for Belt Drive

Advantages Disadvantages
 It can easily install and easily remove.  Power loss due to slip and creep.
 The price of the belt drive is low.  And speed is limited to some extent.
 Simple in construction.  Longer life is not possible.
 The maintenance cost is low.
 Chances of breaking are more.
 No additional lubricant is required.
 It can transfer power vertical, horizontal and
 The operation temperature is limited
inclined too. between -35 to 85 degrees Celsius. If it
 Power consumption is low. exceeds temperature then it causes wear.
Chain Drive

 A chain drive is a Mechanically operating system

where we used different types of chains to transmit
the power or for movement of somethings.
 It is often used to convey power to the wheels of a
vehicle.
 Chains are run over a wheel named sprocket which has
several amounts of teeth around the circumference of
that to grip the chain
Types of Chains Drives:

 Roller chain
 Silent chain
 Leaf Chain
 Flat-top Chain
 Engineering Steel Chain
Advantages and Disadvantages for Chain
Drive

Advantages Disadvantages
Low maintenance.  The major disadvantages are here it requires more and frequent
lubrication.
Greater efficiency up to 97 percent.
Slipping is negligible
 It cannot be used where there is a requirement of slips.

Chain drive can operate in wet conditions too.

 It needs housing or covering.

It can withstand abrasive conditions.  It cannot be used for précised motion requirements.
The chain drive is easy to install.  It is noisy and therefore there is a problem of vibration.
It can be operated at a high temperature Like a belt  The installation or initial cost is more.
which cants not operate at high temperatures.  The velocity fluctuation is more.
Chain drive can be used up to 3 m in distances
between small and large
Gear Drive

 A gear is a rotating circular machine part having cut

teeth or, in the case of a cogwheel or gearwheel,
inserted teeth (called cogs), which mesh with another
toothed part to transmit torque.
 A gear may also be known informally as a cog.
 Geared devices can change the speed, torque, and
direction of a power source.
Types of Gear Drives:

 SPUR GEAR
 HELICAL GEAR
 RACK AND PINION GEAR
 BEVEL GEAR
 WORM AND WORM WHEEL
 SPIRAL GEAR
Advantages and Disadvantages for Gear Drive

Advantages Disadvantages

 With one input speed, no. of output speeds can be  If the lubrication arrangement is not provided,

 Safe and compact.
 Constant velocity ration is obtained.
 Using different types of gears, power can
be transmitted between shafts whose axes
are parallel, inclined, or intersecting to each other.
